Your Friend, The Edshrinker

Watchback: Here we go again! My Thoughts on the "Pilot 1"

This is exciting, I remember last year when we did this and hope fun it was sifting for clues on where the series would go.

Watching the first scene knowing about the Christian, Vincent Mobisode both adds to it and boggles my mind. Its great seeing Boone again and all of his ineptness and adding that scene with him further searching for a pen in the Paulo Nikki episode. Its great how most of the main characters are introduced in that amazing crash scene. Hurley, Rose (although knocked out), Boone, Charlie, Michael screaming Walt, Shannon (I think that was the scream that Jack first heard). Not to mention when Jack come to the beach its silent and then he look over and hear her scream. People say that Jack woke up far from the beach, but it doesn't seem far to me. Not any further then where Bernard landed in the Tail Section crash. A lot of great little character moments.

Then there was the first Kate, Jack scene that was recalled in the season 3 episode at the end of the fall block when Jack was operating on Ben. There also the scene where Jack is standing at the opening of the plane which is copied again in the season 4 finale except with the cockpit part of the plane. Kate said that if it where her she would have run for the door. That and her rubbing her wrists were hints about her being a convict on the run.

Looking at the Sun Jin scenes Jin comes across more as protective then mean, Although he probably still had some of her Dad's influence in his personality. Its interesting that Kate said that during the crash she had her eyes open while Jack had his closed (being knocked out). Also that Jack had taken a few flying lessons, I wonder if that will ever be touched on. Although it was probably not enough to do anything with them.

Looks like Jack was some what of a boozer before the island. I guess with all that he did to his Father and that Christian did to him it would make you that way. Its also great seeing the connection that Jack & Rose make on the plane, that's why flashbacks were so great on this show.

Its interesting how much of a leader Sayid was in the beginning. I love it when Hurley spells bodies in front of Walt and Walt spells it better then Hurley.

Watching the Locke orange scene is more funny now then scary. What was interesting was seeing Vincent watch Jack, Kate & Charlie through the bushes. Almost like he was watching over Jack like Christian had told him to. Another interesting scene was the very brief one with Locke standing in the rain with his arms out, he does it again in season 4 when leading his group to find Jacob's cabin. I remember people thinking he was wacko for doing it in season 4.

I'm curious if Ben had sent the Smoke Monster to kill the Pilot or if Jacob did, or if it was acting on its own. The Pilot stupidly stuck its head out the window, so I wonder if it was really going after him or someone else & he happened to stick his head out?

Its interesting that Jack (In Script stages only when it was a different actor) was originally going to die and that Kate was going to be a soccer Mom who would take over as leader.

POOM Man this is so cool watching these again!

EW Doc Jenson: 'Lost': A Few Lingering Post-Finale Questions

How did Locke wind up in the coffin? Where did the Island go? And will the show get any Emmy love? Doc Jensen offers some final thoughts

By Jeff Jensen

Jeff Jensen, an EW senior writer, has been despondent since the cancellation of ''Twin Peaks''
THE EPILOGUE!

MOVING THE ISLAND; MOVING ONIn which Doc Jensen offers some final thoughts on Lost 4.0; makes a bold, reckless promise; and then packs up his theory-making things and migrates south for the long Lost winter to come.

The aftermathThe fourth season is over, but the buzz from last week's finale rages. Indeed, I've noticed that many Lost bloggers took almost a full week to digest the two-hour opus that was ''No Place Like Home,'' and their thinking is better for it. I like J. Wood's heady analysis of the John Locke/Jeremy Bentham connection over at Powells.com. DarkUFO — whose scoopy spoilage of the finale set hardcore webbed-up Losties aflame with debate over the ethics of fandom — has in the past few days posted a smattering of deep, wide-ranging meditations. Meanwhile, I know a number of fans have been buzzing during the past week about a new theory, posted over at Lost Review. The author of this theory hasn't yet updated it in light of what we learned last week about the Orchid, but my hunch is that the finale will only better inform this intriguing bit of thinking. If you find yourself desperate for a Lost fix — and you haven't yet discovered these brilliant(ly mad) Lost scholars — I encourage you to check them out.

The Island moves...to San Diego?Meanwhile, it appears a new Lost alternate reality game designed to keep us occupied during the off season looms on the horizon. In the final commercial break of the finale, ABC ran a (faux) spot from ''Octagon Global Recruiting,'' promoting a new volunteer drive for — gulp — the Dharma Initiative. (Admit it: You all want to be locked up in your own Dharma hatch, don't you? Just don't ask for Frozen Donkey Wheel duty.) If you missed the commercial, go to the first website ABC has established for this endeavor. You'll find the ad playing on a loop. Pay close attention and you might catch the Easter egg embedded in the spot: Dharma I Ching symbols, inscribed in the revolving golden octagonal ring. What do you think they mean?

Those of you interested in one of Dharma's ''unpaid'' research positions are advised to go to San Diego July 24-27 — which, of course, happens to be the location and duration of this year's Comic-Con, the annual popculturepalooza, where Lost exec producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have traditionally broken their post-finale radio silence and given us the first hint of what lies ahead for the show. Last year, the always entertaining pair (and their spoiler alert bell) offered attendees an early look at a botched, rough draft version of the orientation video for the Orchid. It was here that whispers began that Lost 4.0 would be the time-travel season of Lost. It was also here that the producers formally announced the return of Michael to the show by bringing actor Harold Perrineau with them. (In light of recent events both on and off the show, it's probably very safe to predict that Perrineau won't be popping up at this year's Lindelof-Cuse powwow.) As usual, yours truly will be covering Comic-Con; I'll bring you details and analysis of what goes down there shortly thereafter.

Doc Jensen's Emmy pledgeThen comes Emmy. In light of the strong season Lost turned in, I would be shocked if the show doesn't garner nominations in at least three categories: Best Drama; Best Writing (for ''The Constant''); and Best Supporting Actor (for Michael Emerson, whose Ben was this year's MVP character). So strong is my conviction that Lost should be nominated for Best Drama that I'm willing to do something really drastic if it doesn't get nominated. My original plan was to swear here and now to pull a John Locke/Jeremy Bentham and...shave my head. But, surprisingly enough, this plan was not enthusiastically embraced by Mrs. Doc Jensen when I ran it past her just five minutes ago. So I'll have to come up with something else. Here's hoping I'll never have to follow through — but if I do, we'll make a video of it and post on EW.com.

SOME FINAL FINALE THOUGHTS(An expanded edition of my finale analysis published in this week's magazine.)

Where is the Island?Ben descended into an icy cave underneath a Dharma Initiative time-travel lab and pushed on an ancient wheel. The Island then vanished in a blaze of light and sound, much like an American Idol contestant, taking Locke, Juliet, and Shirtless Sawyer with it. THEORY The Island is located in another dimension, embedded in the space-time fabric of reality. Turning the wheel closed the portal to that realm; turning it again would open it back up. Which is all to say, I don't think the Island technically went anywhere; it is where it's always been. Another possibility that works similar turf: We know from ''The Shape of Things to Come'' that after pushing the wheel, Ben landed in Tunisia about 10 months in the future. Similarly, the Island skipped ahead in time — but unlike Ben, didn't change location. In other words, in terms of geographical coordinates, the Island is exactly where it's always been...wherever the heck that is. Another way to think about it: Like Lost itself, the Island has merely gone offline. When the Island comes back online, it'll be like no time has passed at all — at least, for the people on it.
How did Locke get in the coffin?Last seen on the Island, the boar-hunting baldie had become the jungle king of the Others. But, three years later, Locke was apparently living off-Island as ''Jeremy Bentham'' (another Lost philosopher reference), begging the Oceanic 6 to go back with him. He then allegedly committed suicide. THEORY Locke's death is a trick — part of the Island's plan to manipulate the Oceanic 6 into returning. When they bring Locke's body back, he'll be magically revived. About Locke's chosen fake name, ''Jeremy Bentham'': I strongly suggest you read about the real-life Bentham on
Wikipedia. But also check out the Jeremy Bentham entry at LostPedia. The fans over there have made some provocative connections to another Lost philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and another loaded Lost name, Jacob. Check it out: It's revolutionary — and terrifying — stuff.

What did Sawyer whisper to Kate? With Lapidus' helicopter leaking fuel, Sawyer heroically chose to lighten the load by jumping ship — but before he did, he whispered a final request into Kate's ear, then smooched her. THEORY The con man asked his crush to check up on Clementine, the daughter he fathered with con gal (and Kate acquaintance) Cassidy. Or maybe he said: ''When you come back, can you bring me a shirt?''

Were the polar bears being trained to push on the frozen donkey wheel? We know that the cave where the Frozen Donkey Wheel is located is all icy and stuff. And we know that a polar bear was found in Tunisia, which is where Ben materialized after pushing on said Frozen Donkey Wheel. Putting two and two together, many fans have been asking: Was Dharma training its polar bears to operate the subterranean turnstile of destiny? DOC JENSEN SAYS Maybe. But you saw how tight and narrow that passageway was. And then there was that little ice-capped well leading to the ladder...how the heck would the polar bears get down there? Still: intriguing idea.

GOODBYE — FOR NOW

Another season of Lost has ended; another season of Doc Jensen comes to a close. As I've already indicated, I'll have another report by the end of the summer, and hopefully, more columns this fall, counting down to the season premiere. Truth is, the Lost part of my brain never really turns off; I always have some theory-crunching application running. I look forward to the crazy new ideas that await me in the months to come.

As always, big thanks to Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof for their teases and insight this season. And an even bigger thank you for your readership. I know this column can get weird and even downright infuriating at times, with my ill-considered digressions into fields of thought (political, scientific, literary, philosophical) better left to more intellectually disciplined and responsible minds. Thank for patience, laughter, and even participation. Stay in touch, will you? JeffJensenEW@aol.com is how you can reach me. I look forward to the correspondence.

Be well, folks. Namaste!

Kristen on Lost Deaths

Janet in R.I.: Anything new to report on Harold Perrineau’s death on Lost? I was so sad to see him go!

You and me both, babe. But the good news is that Harold is set to star in a dramedey on ABC (he was cast in the pilot The Unusuals), which is music to my ears. If you’ve seen much of H.P. in real life, you know he is (a) hilarious, (b) funny and (a) did I mention the funny? And of course, he can act his ass off. Personally, I never felt like poor, unlikable Mikey-poo did him much justice, so a fresh start where he can flaunt his comedy chops sounds good all around to me. Just my opinion! If you disagree, let mama have it in the comments below...

Mena in Los Angeles: Please, spill the beans! Is there a chance that my darling Jin survived the freighter explosion on Lost?

Jin is gonna be fine. I don't know exactly how, but he's going to be fine. I suspect that the difference between Michael's and Jin's survival is that Michael was trapped inside the hold, whereas Jin being up on the edge of the deck meant he had a chance to be blown clear of the ship. Besides, the guy magically survived the crash of a 747 and the wreck of the raft. No reason he shouldn't survive this shipwreck—I choose to believe the Island clearly joins us all in loving him and wanting to keep him around.

Cristina L. in Miami: About the person leaving Lost next season but returning the for season six...

You said it's a girl from the first season, so is Rose included, or do you just mean Kate, Sun and Claire.Rose would have been included, but as revealed in the Redux's "What's to Come" section, Emilie de Ravin will be on a holding contract with Lost for season five and returning in season six. But don't worry, you can get your Emilie fix elsewhere in the coming year: She's got a part in the Johnny Depp flick Public Enemies, she's in the period baseball picture The Perfect Game with Clifton Collins Jr. and last but not least, she'll be costarring in Ball Don't Lie with Nick Cannon and Ludacris. Even without Lost, she's going to be a busy cookie!Marc in Brooklyn, N.Y.:

When Ben was in the funeral parlor in the finale, was that live, real, off-island Ben or dead, spirit-vision Ben?

I had to read the comments of the Redux to figure this out (thank you Nick!), but I think that was the real Ben, because...When he moved the Island, he was teleported (or whatever) to the Tunisian desert, where we find him at the beginning of the circa 2005 flash-forward in "Shape of Things to Come." When we first see him in that scene, he has a wound that matches the cut on his arm at the end of "No Place Like Home." Crazy, right? So, to me, it does seem like he's been genuinely exiled from the Island, and since he leapt forward to 2005 he has been living and working only in the "real world."

As requested...I have put together a 3 minute + video clip of the Day Locke Didn't Push the Button. John Locke. So sure of himself, so sure of the island. He was sure here as he is now..."Just wait until you see what I'm about to do." Ok John. LOST: Shooting Gallery

LOST: Shooting Gallery is a board game. The board is a square with 6 squares along each side plus four corner squares. You should have a pencil and paper to keep track of your score - or assign one score-keeper. You will need a game spinner number 1 to 4, 5 or 6 or one (six-sided) di.
You will need a distinctive game piece for each player. (coins, buttons, etc.)
You need a small stack of file cards labeled or depicting WA-boy, LT-tugboat, 2 Dynamite cards, Explosion, Knife and Medusa Spider.
The 24 boxes along the side depict two dozen of the Women of Lost.
The starting corner space shows a Pistol pointing the direction of play (counterclockwise). The opposite corner square depicts Tom Friendly, Ethan Rom and Leslie Arzt.
You pick a Lost male character with gun-toting priveleges: Jack, Sawyer, Locke, Sayid, Jin. (If you have more players add Keamy, Omar, Alpert, Mikhail, The Marshal, etc.) Roll or spin for first turn, then proceed counter-clockwise.
Roll one di or spin and move that number of spaces. Many squares (Kate, Sun, Juliet, etc.) will be no action/no point spaces.
However, if you land on: Danielle Rousseau, Alexandra, Mrs. Beatrice Klugh, Shannon Rutherford, Bonnie, Greta, Nadia, blonde New Otherton casualty, Tom Friendly, Ethan Rom and POSSIBLY Penny Widmore, (pending future developments), you get TEN (10) Bang Points.
If you shoot Ana-Lucia Cortez you get 10 Bang Points plus the WA-boy card. If you shoot Libby you get 10 points plus the LT-Tugboat card. If you have both cards with WA-LT, the boy and the tugboat, you are allowed to leave the game.
If you land on Nikki Fernandez you take the Medusa Spider card and remain comatose for three turns, during which the other players may bury you alive.
If you shoot Charlotte Staples Lewis you get Five (5) points - you shot and hit, but she was wearing a flak vest.
If you land on the Naomi Dorrit space you get the knife card, she dies slowly and painfully and you Lose 25 points for violating the "bringing a knife to a gunfight" rule.
If you land on Isabel the sheriff or Leslie Arzt you get a dynamite card, blow up and lose immediately, You are out of the game but may stay around and "get on" the other players.
If you land on Claire Littleton you get the explosion card and who the h*ll knows what - you act all spooky and not everyone can see you and you can stay in the game but you can't win.
The first person to reach 100 points wins.

LOST Trailer - Watchback for Episode 1/Season 1

Ok, ok...I know this is a little lame. Would it help if I said I just threw this together before work this morning (instead of prepping a lesson plan to educate America's youth?)? No? Oh well. I'm still a novice and I am trying to figure out how to insert my own music score without negating the video's audio track and stuff like that. I'm getting there. Anyway, for what it is worth...The Trailer for our LOST Watchback - S01E01 - Pilot Part 1. Enjoy. Or not.

LOST Clip: The Sayid vs. Keamy Brawl

Napoleon Park mentioned this might be a great clip to put together for Lost fans and I couldn't agree more. This 90-seconds of pure ass-kick-ness was fun, intense and well-choreographed. Although it is safe to say, without Richard's appearance, Sayid would have joined Shannon...for 85 seconds they fought to a draw. With all the advantages Keamy had, Sayid has nothing to be ashamed of with his performance. The best part of Keamy's performance was his ability to play dead after the bullets hit the body armor.

If anyone has any clips they would like to see put together, please leave a comment here or in the AICN TB and I will see what I can do. Enjoy and Namaste.

LOST Clip: TNPLH - Ben and the FDW...Where's the Island???

I have to admit, I am practicing. This seemed like a good clip to work on, considering to is the "game changer" that Darlton was referring to. And so many questions are brought up by these 4 minutes:
What is the FDW?
Is it technology, magic, or both?
Where did it come from?
Where and when did the island go...if it indeed went anywhere?
Did Farraday and the raft folks (Jin included??) get swept up with the island?
And I'm sure there are more...
Enjoy a Classic 4 minutes of Lost

Lost article at Pop Matters by Daynah Burnett

Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/45etgx and here's the article:

Moving the Island

It’s not easy being a television show in 2008. Just ask Lost. After last year’s scattershot third season, critics and fans exhaled when its redemptive flash-forwarding finale seemed to be exactly the paradigm shift the show required. Suddenly, Lost was as exciting as ever. With an explicit narrative arc, the series felt invigorated and refocused.

And then, before you could say “Mittelos Industries,” in storms a writers’ strike and indefinite hiatus. We waited. Our nails bitten to the quick, we waited—through the network’s tedious pop-up style reruns, fans’ endless theorizing, and the announcement of a truncated season—we waited. When at last the clouds parted and the fourth season re-launched in April, our patience was indeed rewarded. Under the least desirable of circumstances, Lost has managed to pull off one of its very best seasons to date.

No one is as shocked as I am. Readers (and flamers) of my Lost chronicles will recall my waning satisfaction, increasing frustration, and sense of having been fucked with. While I still maintain that this season commenced with a lurch, I’m pleased to report that it closed out plain better than ever.

Much credit is due to the series’ new connect-the-dots structure, which not only complements Lost‘s circuitous mythology, but adds flourishes of dramatic irony to otherwise rote sequences. A perfect example of this was the season opener’s revealing of “The Oceanic Six,” the public moniker given to the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Though it took over half a season of flash-forwards to discern who these survivors were, the tension that “future” information created provided an unprecedented adrenalin rush when action unfolded in “present” time on the island. By replacing the question of what will happen, to how will it happen and to whom, each exchange became more compelling and worth the kind of scrutiny the series so infamously demands. This new storytelling device saved Lost from the hype machine doldrums, and from infinitely extending the litany of already exhausted-by-blogging possible outcomes.

Take Sayid’s (Naveen Andrews) transformation this season. In last year’s finale, we saw him, in his usual utilitarian garb, taking out various Others with his neck-snapping version of the helicopter—cool, for sure, but somehow expected from a highly skilled military man with little left to lose. Yet, in this season’s “The Economist,” we flash-forward to find a version of Sayid worthy of a spy novel. Hair straightened, he’s sipped coffees in Europe, seduced elegant women, and worked as an assassin for the Others’ head-honcho Ben (Michael Emerson). The pleasure of this turn was two-fold. Not only was it fun to see Sayid become a trigger-happy turncoat widower, but it was also grand to conjecture how he got there, as false leads were delivered regularly.

In a series notorious for all manner of ridiculous red herrings, each episode now includes a certain element of camp. Or, there would be, if the acting weren’t so darn good. Matthew Fox’s portrayal of Jack Shephard, ostensibly the super-flawed hero, has reached a level of consistency and nuance that rivals live theatre. Consider his performance when Jack learned from Carole (Susan Duerden) that fellow 815 survivor Claire (Emile de Ravin) is his half-sister. As we watched him absorb his revised family history (a fact that we’ve suspected/known for two years), in an admittedly typical long-lost sibling soap opera plot move, his hand reached for his crumbling face—silent and awash with pain, fear, and disbelief.

Or, consider his entirely unsympathetic, but wholly believable, reaction to Sun’s (Yunjun Kim) grief after watching her husband (Daniel Dae Kim) die on an exploding freighter. In the wake of her writhing frame and guttural screams—again, top-notch acting—the only bedside manner Jack could muster is a dismissive, if not annoyed, “He’s gone.”

Perhaps all this emoting (or not) reveals the benefit of Lost‘s first two years of character-building flashbacks, as it gave both the actors and the audience something to hold on to when the show was at its most far-fetched. Surely the time Ben spent captive in the hatch in Season Two, tied in a battle of wits with John Locke (Terry O’Quinn), punctuated his new role as Locke’s mentor. During this season’s finale, his straight-faced response to Locke’s probing as to the aim of Dharma Initiative’s research in The Orchid station, included, “If you mean time-traveling bunnies, then yes.”

This would have been otherwise preposterous if the two men hadn’t spent so long in mortal danger—or if the next scene hadn’t included Ben’s journey into a frozen basement to turn a giant donkey wheel that magically relocated the island. Silliness aside, Ben and Locke’s ongoing entanglement features gravity and complexity. The finale’s climax certainly suggested that Locke will now assume Ben’s role as leader of the Others, and perhaps their mutual patricidal transgressions will bond them in ways as yet unknown. But with Ben unable to return to the island, I have to say I’ll miss his bitchy exasperation with Locke.

No discussion of Season Four would be complete without mention of Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and Penny (Sonya Walger). After Desmond showed that Lost can still eke out a stand-alone episode with “The Constant,” his and Penny’s cross-class romance seemed milked for all of its potential pathos. And then, in a feat that should rank with the appearance of the Hillbilly pirates in Season One’s finale, Penny’s boat, the Searcher, arrived in time to pick up the Oceanic Six (plus two), doomed and adrift in a flimsy rescue raft. A deus ex machina if ever there was one, it still made sense in the show’s exacting temporal framework. The Searcher’s rescue was about as far flung as everything else on Lost, but no less effective at jerking tears.

It’s surprising that Lost remains lauded for its density, literacy, and production values, when, increasingly, it is propelled by its characters’ emotional lives. When, early this season, the show finally answered the longstanding question—“What’s the smoke monster?”—Ben’s pithy “So?” was immensely satisfying, especially given all the turmoil he’s been through. Lost excels when it backs its characters into emotional corners. While Desmond and Penny’s unlikely reunion seemed saccharine to some, in a world where the dead roam freely and the worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves, at least they got a happy ending for now.

The Sun Kwon Debate: Evil or Working a Con for the Greater Good?

First of all. I want to say this is my first attempt at video editing. I am so not knowing what I am doing...but somehow I managed to create exactly what I wanted. The real trick will be...can I do it again! I am especially proud of the smash-cut ending. I do not know why I love the sound effect so much ("poom"), but it completes anything "LOST" properly. I wouldn't be satisfied without it. Enough blathering..."Just wait 'til you see what I'm about to do!" I sound like (shudders) Locke.

BIG debate over the next #%$# months will be: What in the time traveling bunny is Sun up to? Is she evil??? Turned bitter and angry over the loss of her husband and father of her child? Looking for revenge and the destruction of a couple's happiness - namely Desmond David Hume and Penelope Widmore? Or is this a dangerous game, attempting to play Widdy in a long con to get what she wants (information on the island) while also destroying the man responsible for sending the nut job (Keemy) that blew up the boat and turned Jin into Arzt Chunks? Something else entirely??? We just don't know enough...yet.

But let us begin with this. And this is where my new-found video editing attempt originates. Below is a scene from "There's No Place Like Home - Part 3". Sun meets Widmore in London. Some folks have made mention that Sun looks like she swallowed a bug as she walked away from the conversation. Others think she is supremely confident and is a different, more sinister character than the Sun we have known. Watch the clip and make the call.

Napoleon mentioned this in the TB on AICN and I agree with him whole-heartedly. We would LOVE to see some more feedback in the Comments sections here in Room 23. As you watch the video clip, weigh in on the "Sun Debate". What kind of Character are we going to see in season 5? Comment here and/or jump into the fray at AICN (Link below).

Some Info on JJ's New Show: FRINGE

One thing that can be taken and applied to Lost immediately is - if this is successful, considering it is on Fox, what does that mean for the character of Matthew Abaddon? Lance Reddick appears to be a major character in this show.

On to the review from E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos:

Fringe Friday: Quick Impressions After Thursday's Press Screening

Fringe

The Lost season-four finale is all the rage with the kids today, but I would be remiss if I didn't report at least a few of my findings from yesterday's Fringe screening at the Fox lot.

Long story short? It's super.

Want the long story long? Click in for what Fringe is about, why it's great and what unanswered questions from this series are going to be torturing us come fall on Fox...

Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, Fringe

What Is It? FBI Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) finds herself entangled in an investigation of a series of paranormal crimes and mysteries. Many or all of these happenings appear to be related to the dirty work of an evil genius. To solve these mysteries and crimes, she must work with a similiar genius, only the one on her side (John Noble) is incarcerated, insane and of indeterminate moral orientation. His miscreant adult son (Joshua Jackson) is the only who can, well, "speak Walter," meaning that he is the only one equipped to interpret the man's mad mutterings.

Sure to have procedural elements as well as an ongoing myth arc, Fringe buffers its horror-show edge with a fair portion of comedy, an undercurrent of romance and some nice action sequences as the basis for a lot of interesting character interaction, as Dunham puts together a motley team of investigators and scientists (including the marvelous Kirk Avecedo) to help take on the bogeyman behind the curtain.

Is It Good? Have you seen the Alias pilot? How about the Lost pilot? Did you think those were OK? If yes, you'll like this. It is of equivalent quality, if perhaps a bit less grandiose than the Lost pilot. Still, the story structure of Fringe feels perfect. All the narrative pieces that need to fit together, in the end, do. Guns placed on tables in act I go off in act III. Loose ends are tied up or are drawn out enough to be a season-long story threads. Anna Torv's Olivia Dunham is a woman of substance and grace. Joshua Jackson, for his part, is what they call laugh-out-loud funny.

What Happens? We were asked to neither review Fringe (at this stage) nor to give away key plot points, which limits discussion topics to a certain extent, but I thought the smattering of teases below might be of interest. However, to summarize the high points, the passengers of a transatlantic 747 flight are turning into melting messes—I call them snot zombies—and Olivia, an investigator who is at odds with her disdainful superior, is sent off on a wild-goose chase that turns out to be a mission into the midst of the mystery. Now, on to those teases...

Lance Reddick

Endearments: The dialogue in this pilot is riddled with the kind of patronizing endearments that the ad men of Mad Men can get away with in 1962, but which are just pathetic and old-school in today's work environment. "Sweetheart…honey…baby." (Told you Olivia was having trouble with her boss.) However, even when used derisively, "Sweetheart" in the hands of Joshua Jackson or Lance Reddick (Dunham's dismissive team leader) almost makes a girl wonder if there really is some love behind the word. Does condescension necessarily abrogate a sincere sentiment? Olivia Dunham is not naive enough to think that, and neither am I, but I won't apologize for the wondering...kudos to the script and the actors for adding in all the layers.

Self-Storage Units Are Evil: In movies and television, self-storage units are only used by no-goodnik serial killers and thugs, and in real life, you don't need that much crap. Which is to say: (a) Seriously, self-storage units are evil, and (b) there is a no-goodnik out there in one of those units, and what happens there sets up a chain of events that entangle our heroine personally in what's going down. Keep your eyes peeled during this scene. You'll want to use your memories of it at a later time.

Negative Space Is a Powerful Thing: I don't want to outline it too closely, but there is a "stock" TV scene where two characters face a medical crisis and are rushed into a hospital. As directed and edited together here, it is easily the best and most correct that I have ever seen, both visually and emotionally.

With Apologies to All the Hot Bald Guys: Hairless mammals are creepifying. Snot zombies are grossest of all, but hairless mammals definitely make the "things repellent and horrifying" list generated by this show.

The Titles: As reported elsewhere, the location titles are awesome: Specifically, they are 3-D words in the 2-D space of the show. It's hard to explain, but I feel like I recognize the technology from a Spider-Man movie commercial where, if I recall correctly, the text of movie critics' blurbs hung between the buildings of Manhattan as Spidey swung through the streets. Anyway, the titles look great in general and there is one in particular that has a cute twist, but I won't spoil it for you here.

Mildly Relevant Factoid: Of the five major branches of the U.S. armed forces, the United States Marine Corps branch has the smallest percentage of female personnel. I include this information because based on what I'm deducing about Dunham's backstory, it may be germane.

Crossover! In terms of series style, theme and structure, there's a lot of Alias and X-Files at work here, but there's also a fun little Lost shout-out. Look for it in one of the FBI scenes.

Quibbles: These quibbles are perhaps unfair because this was not a finished copy of the pilot, and/or these are painfully pedantic, and/or they are intentional plot points inserted by the writers, but...

  • They speak Farsi in Iran, not Iraq. You could arguably be a Farsi-speaker doing business in Iraq, but still...I quibble.
  • "After human subjects, cows are the best. Unless you need milk." Funny, but I think there are nursing mothers who would beg to differ. Maybe cows are best if you need butter and cream?

Questions: With any luck, some of these will be answered in the November 2008 sweeps episodes of Fringe:

  • What was the incident in the lab?
  • "What do we do? What don't we do?"
  • "Does this not concern you?"

Update form E! Online Re: Cast

For those of you that have not read the reports yet, Harrold Perrineau has been cast in a new ABC pilot so it looks like he has landed on his feet ok. Also, a few days ago it was confirmed that Emilie De Ravin has a "holding contract" for Season 5 and will return in Season 6.

Also, if you have kept up to date on all the spoilers, you would know that Daniel Dae Kim's character Jin, will be ok. So nothing really new, but it is a little more clarification for you all.

Here are the details:

Cristina L. in Miami: About the person leaving Lost next season but returning the for season six...You said it's a girl from the first season, so is Rose included, or do you just mean Kate, Sun and Claire.
Rose would have been included, but as revealed in the Redux's "What's to Come" section, Emilie de Ravin will be on a holding contract with Lost for season five and returning in season six. Even without Lost, she's going to be a busy cookie!

THoughts on "Theres No Place Like Home" 2 & 3

It was great getting then extra addition to the we have to go back. Man Kate is angry at Jack, Im wondering how Jack is going to get Kate & Sun to return back.

I so loved the Keemy Sayid fight, so great! Kind of like the Ethan Jack fight.

It was great seeing Walt again, its sad watching now knowing that Michael is dead and that Hurley wasn't able to or didn't know about it to tell him about it.

I love Locke & Jacks Bygones by Bygones talk. I wonder if Jack was supposed to take Locke's place like Locke toke Jacks place, but got killed. Its interesting Darlton in the commentary of "Man of Science, Man of Faith" said that Jack was the Man of Science AND the Man of Faith. he has seen many miracles and still goes back & forth a lot. I wonder why Ben told Locke to go down to the Orchid without the real instructions of blowing up the machine and going down to the Donkey wheel.

I loved the little moment between Michael & Sun where she tells him that she was pregnant. Hailing back to their friendship/relationship from season 1.

I loved Rose when she said that she would be watching Miles. His discussion with Charlotte was interesting also. I remember that CS Lewis's Narnia books were about the children going to Narnia doing what they were called to do, leaving and then latter when Narnia need them again it would find a different way to call them back. This could be true with both Charlotte, the OC 6 & Michael.

I love Locke expression when Ben was doing the exact thing that the video said not to do. Im betting the fact that the Orchid tape stopped & rewound meant that there was more tape somewhere that will pop up latter.

I love Sawyer & Franks hacksaw moment.

I love how Locke & Ben leaves the TV on as a distraction like Desmond did when Jack first came into the swan hatch. Then Ben uses creepy Locke to throw him off guard.

I felt bad for Hurley when Frank said that they need to remove a few hundred pounds from the copper. When Sawyer jumped off I was worried that Ezra James Sharkington would return.

I love how Sayid is playing Bond in the future. I'm curious where Sayid "Somewhere Safe" for Hurley would be? I love Hurley's checkmate Mr. Eko. line.

It looks like Ben was the first one to find Widmore.

I love Michael & Jin's moment together about him being a Father & Husband and needing to leave.

Sun's meeting with Widmore is going to be another big problem in Jack getting the OC 6 to return.

Juliet & Sawyer look good together I actually hope that they get together. I'm surprised that they were able to see the boat from the shore when they weren't able to during the whole season. It was kind of sad seeing Ben tell Locke that he was no longer the leader. Ben falling from the ladder explains why he had a cut in his arm when he appeared in the desert. I curious though when Jacob spoke with Ben about moving the island and his banishment. maybe Jacob spoke through his thoughts?

The helicopter crashing in the Ocean reminded me of when the Tailies crashed into the water and had to get to the shore.

Kate's dream was odd, kind of like when Remy appeared to Locke in a dream. I'm confused as to why Claire or ghost Claire would not want Kate to bring Aaron back to her when the Psychic Malkin told her that bad things would happen if anyone else toke care of Aaron.

It was bitter sweet seeing the OC 6 pull up to that beach.

So I'm curious as to what the very bad things that happened after Jack left and why it was Jacks fault. I'm curious as to how Jack will convince Kate & Sun to return also all of them does that mean Desmond & Frank? And why bring Locke body back? will that resurrect him? or do something else?

The ending reminds me of the ending in the sixth Harry Potter book. At that point Dumbledore was dead things looked really bad, but Harry knew what he had to do to end Voldemort finally. Now Locke has died and Jack with Ben's help knows that he has a purpose and what he has to do (with Ben's help) to save the island.

Great but difficult things are about to come in the next two seasons.

Proof That Jin Is Alive!

I can admit it when I was wrong, and obviously Jin is alive. As can quite clearly be seen here, he left the freighter and swam to the zodiac raft and paddled away before the explosion engulfed the deck in flames.

Seriously, my three or four seconds estimate was way off - in the clip below Jin is last seen in the deck of the feighter at 3:43 and the explosion occurs at 4:16, 33 seconds later. Plenty of time for him to have abandoned ship and gotten far enough away to avoid being towed under along with the sinking vessel. I was wrong, Jin is Alive.

William Mapother - Ethan Rom Interview

First of all, do you watch Lost?

Absolutely. I’m a big fan.

How did you get the role of Ethan? Was it because you have the word “other” in your last name?Ha-ha! I got the role because my agent submitted me, and JJ Abrams, the show’s co-creator, really liked my performance in “In the Bedroom.” The producers didn’t ask me to audition; they just offered me the role - on the morning the show premiered on TV. I hadn’t even heard of it, but what actor is going to turn down work?? I got very lucky, having this show drop into my lap.
Ethan had a lot of potential as a character, in my opinion. I’m sorry he’s gone, but the great thing about Lost is that they can bring old characters back anytime they want in flashbacks. The burning question right now is when we might see Ethan again. Do you have any information regarding this?If I did and I told you, my life would be in danger. : ) The truth is, I don’t know. They just call me when they need me. Of course I’d love to be on the show all the time, but they have their own plan. Unfortunately. : )

While we’re on the topic of Ethan’s death: Why do you think he and Goodwin died so easily, while Mikhail survived so many different things?Good question. Perhaps because Mikhail didn’t interact so much with the so-called ‘good guys’? They’re a dangerous group to spend time with! Trivia: Goodwin (Brett Cullen) and I share the same manager and are good friends.

One of the many interesting things about Ethan is that he seems to have some sort of super-strength. First he dragged Claire and Charlie through the jungle, hung Charlie to a tree without letting Claire get away, and later beat Jack up pretty bad. Are we looking too much into this, or do you think it means something?I think it might mean something, but you made one
assumption. How do you know Ethan hanged Charlie? It was never shown, and Charlie never said Ethan did it. Hmmmm, right? Also, perhaps he had help dragging Charlie and Claire. We saw him beat up Jack, but then later Jack beat up Ethan, right? So I don’t know for sure. There are some aspects of Ethan even I can’t answer.

With your own, appealing personality, you appeared on the show in an initially positive role of Ethan, who later seems to be a “bad guy”. Is there any hope that as the story unfolds, we might find out that Ethan has actually been a positive character all the way through, in which he would be similar to your own, kind self?Basically, anything is possible on that dang island. However, as the show keeps adding characters, it does seem to become increasingly unlikely that the audience will get a full dose of Ethan explanation. I do hope at least that we learn a bit more about his past. In terms of him being a ‘bad guy,’ I think that people wrongly assume he’s evil. For example, both Jack and Charlie (with a club) both attacked him first. And when Ethan lived among the survivors, he could have hurt them but didn’t; he only pick papayas (!). And when we saw him in the flashback with Claire, he was thoughtful and protective of her. Finally, we learned he was a surgeon!

In the show’s third season we learned a lot about the Others, and their reason for being on the island. We also saw how some people were there before the Dharma Initiative, like Richard Alpert, and others were later recruited by Ben as was Juliet. Should we consider Ethan a native or a recruit? You’re asking good questions. I could make an argument both ways, frankly, but I lean toward Ethan being a native.

In the episode “Maternity Leave” (season 2), we saw what happened during the time Claire was taken by Ethan. They seemed to really warm up to each other. (Although Claire didn’t really know what was going on.) Do you think Ethan actually had feelings for Claire? Do you think he actually kidnapped her, against Ben’s will, to try and save her from dying, like all the other pregnant women on the island?I believe that Ethan did have personal feelings for Claire, and they went beyond caring for her only as a doctor would. I’m not sure I’m convinced that his kidnapping of her was against Ben’s will, if only because Ben is so feared. I think he was probably told to bring back any pregnant women, and he fell for her. Perhaps he was planning some way to protect or save her, though..

Do you have a favorite character on the show, besides Ethan?I like so many of them. Some of my favorites: Locke, Jack, Sayid, and of course Ben.

Most of your scenes were with Emilie de Ravin, who plays Claire. How was it like working with her? Is she really that gorgeous in real life? Who did you enjoy working with the most?Emilie is beautiful, and she’s a lot of fun to work with. However, almost all my scenes in Season 3 were with Juliet, and Elizabeth Mitchell is an absolute delight. She’s professional and funny and very giving. And I worked with Jack, too. I enjoyed working with everyone on the cast!

How did you like working on Lost? Do you keep in touch with any of the actors? It was a ball. The cast, crew and writer/producers are all terrific. I still keep in touch with a few. It’s difficult to stay in touch with all of them. First, there are so many cast members now! Second, many of them are married, and between work and family commitments, there’s just not enough time to go around.

The creators recently introduced flash forwards in the show. How did you react to the twist at the end of last season’s finale? At first I wasn’t sure I’d like it, because I was afraid it would ruin the suspense. I’m now less against it, so I’m waiting to see where they take us…

What might we expect from the rest of the 4th season? Do you know anything about what’s coming up?Absolutely no idea! (And I couldn’t tell if I did!)

Can we expect to see you in any upcoming movies or TV shows? What are you up to these days?I have two new movies out on video: Moola and The Lather Effect. I’m supposed to start shooting something soon. I’ll be appearing in David Mamet’s famous play, ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ in September. A lot of my time recently has been spent helping prepare and negotiate the new contract for the actors’ union. We’re still working on that now. It’s the first contract to cover the internet, so there’s a lot to work out.

Thank you so much for doing this Q&A with us, it means so much to us here at the lostspoilers.org community. Is there anything you’d like to say to the Hungarian Lost fans?First, thank you for watching the show and enjoying Ethan. Second, here is a link to my website (www.williammapother.com), and here’s a link to a ‘Lost’ site where you can email questions in to some of the actors (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/forumdisplay.php?f=51). I answer lots of emails there. Finally, I was briefly in Budapest in January 2007 and loved it! I look forward to returning to your beautiful country.

TV Guide Interview with an Unhappy HP

Harold Perrineau Dishes on his Lost Exit (Again)

Harold Perrineau, Lost

Lost's breathtaking finale will no doubt have fans feverishly dissecting its innumerable puzzles until the show returns in early 2009. (Read our recap and weigh in with your thoughts!) Locke (aka Jeremy Bentham) is in the coffin?! What "very bad things" happened after the Oceanic 6 left the island?? How in Jacob's name is Ben gonna help all of them — plus Locke! — get back there??? And exactly where did the former Others ringleader and that wacky frozen device move the island to?

But at least one major character's fate was definitively sealed with the close of Season 4 when Michael (Harold Perrineau), the suicidal castaway — and father to "real big" mystery boy Walt — perished aboard the fiery freighter. "Michael had an incredibly heroic, noble death," says executive producer Damon Lindelof. "He sacrificed his own life to redeem himself for past mistakes and to help the Oceanic 6 get off the island." Sound familiar? It was this time last year that we were mourning the loss of the similarly selfless Charlie. Though Michael got a little something special that the ex-junkie rock star did not: a surprise send-off from Christian Shephard.

Shortly after he wrapped filming, an emotional Perrineau — who made a much-hyped return to the series in March after leaving in Season 2 — called to chat about his explosive second exit, the mad dash home to be with pregnant wife Brittany and why he feels the lack of a Michael-Walt reunion was "not cool."

TV Guide: Did you know Michael was being killed off when you returned?
Harold Perrineau: I had no idea. It's like, what the hell? I came back for that?

TV Guide: You're laughing as you say that, but you don't sound particularly pleased.
Perrineau: I'm disappointed, mostly because I wanted Michael and Walt to have a happy ending. I was hoping Michael would get it together and actually want to be a father to his kid and try to figure out a way to get back [home]. But this is [the producers'] story. If I were writing it, I would write it differently.

TV Guide:: So when did you get the news?
Perrineau: [Lindelof and fellow executive producer Carlton Cuse] called before the finale scripts were out. They said they weren't going to continue with Michael.

TV Guide:: And what did you say to that?
Perrineau: At this point, I've been on the island, off the island, back on the island — so I just went, "Oh, ok." [Laughs] This is their show and they know what they can or cannot write. I thought it was disappointing and a waste to come back, only to get beat up a few times and then killed. I felt like it was sort of pandering to some fans who wanted to see Michael punished because he betrayed people.

TV Guide: Are you referring to when he shot and killed Ana Lucia and Libby in Season 2?
Perrineau: Exactly. I honestly feel like Michael's death served a really weird bloodlust for the fans.

TV Guide: Were you disappointed Michael and Walt didn't reconnect before your character died?
Perrineau: Listen, if I'm being really candid, there are all these questions about how they respond to black people on the show. Sayid gets to meet Nadia again, and Desmond and Penny hook up again, but a little black boy and his father hooking up, that wasn't interesting? Instead, Walt just winds up being another fatherless child. It plays into a really big, weird stereotype and, being a black person myself, that wasn't so interesting. [Responds Cuse: "We pride ourselves on having a very racially diverse cast. It's painful when any actor's storyline ends on the show. Harold is a fantastic actor whose presence added enormously to Lost."]

TV Guide: Take me back to your last day of shooting.
Perrineau: My last day was kind of hectic. [Production] was trying to get me out because, at the time, my wife was a centimeter dilated.

TV Guide: Was she in labor at the hospital when you got back to L.A.?
Perrineau: No, I got home and then for another week, the baby would not come! We were like, "Seriously, dude, I was in Hawaii rushing like a madman!” I was talking to the baby, my wife was walking around, practically hiking, but the baby just would not come out! [Laughs] So we went to the hospital a week later and induced. A beautiful little girl came on May 7. Wynter Aria — I thought it was a nice name. It's poetic, and she's a little poetry in our life.

TV Guide: Let's talk highlights. Surely, you had some positive experiences on Lost.
Perrineau:
Doing the job in Hawaii was cool. Getting to meet and work with [co-creator] JJ Abrams was very cool. The day we found out the show [premiered] so well [in 2004] was an amazing day. We were all so hopeful and excited. The first season was one of my best years as a working actor. Not to say there weren't tough times, but I loved the first season. And that one of my best friends, Dan [Dae Kim, who plays Jin], and I got to do pretty much the whole finale together.

TV Guide: Dead characters have a way of returning to the show. Would you be open to that?
Perrineau: I'd love to go back and work with people I really like working with, but I would have to know what was happening [story-wise] before I showed up again. Because this [last] storyline, I full-on feel, "No, that's not cool.'"

TV Guide: What's next for you?
Perrineau: This movie I did with Stephen Dorff called Felon is probably coming out at the end of the summer. And I'm in talks for a couple different films.

TV Guide: Any final thoughts?
Perrineau: Just that I hope the show continues to thrill people. I'm sorry to have to go, but I'll see you in another incarnation. I'll re-create myself because that's what I do. That part of leaving is pretty cool.

Deleted Scene from Doc Arzt..

I miss it already. I know I know, it isn't even a week. Sue me.

Doc Arzt is putting some cut scenes up over the next 8 months...when he releases them, we will try to pass them along as quickly as possible.

This scene was discussed but not released until recently. It has Miles, Kate, and Sayid cruising through the jungle on the way to New Otherton. They arrive at the Sonic Fence...
