More Sayid and Hurley Scene Reports

**UPDATED** 8/22 12AM PST Ryan just provided us with an update with more details about the filming currently occurring. I have added a Google satellite image of where they are filming.

As I assumed, it seems to be a scene shortly after Sayid gets Hurley out of Santa because Ryan mentions Hurley being in a robe.

NOTE: Original post is below and Ryan said he was heading back to the set so stay tuned for MORE updates soon!

They’ve commandeered a four-story apartment complex at 1818 Anapuni St. to film a scene with Naveen Andrews and Jorge Garcia.

It’s a night shoot, with Klieg lights on cranes illuminating the whole building. It was raining when shooting started, so they kept the parking lot wet with a hose. In one corner, dozens of empty cardboard boxes and several large athletic-style foam blocks. On the corner, an ambulance. Looks like a stunt fall is in the cards.

The scene so far? Hurley and Sayid drive into the apartment complex parking lot in a late-model blue SUV. (It and the other cars have California plates.) They exit, Sayid looking sharp in a black shirt and dark khaki pants, Hurley wearing a thick, long, grey bathrobe over a blue T-shirt. Hurley’s also holding a big burger and paper cup. They make their way stealthily up the stairs, and walk the length of the building, past several apartments.

Security is keeping an eye on me. I even voluntarily submitted to a bag search. These guys don’t mess around, but fortunately I’m also a known factor. They’ve yelled down several other people with cameras. People who, of course, I go out of my way to meet. Otherwise, I’m just standing under the lighting crane, watching Hurley and Sayid walk. Again and again and again…

‘LOST’ at Church

SPOILER ALERT!

Churches appear in ‘LOST’ quite often. Not surprising, given the show’s underlying themes of faith and redemption. Today, the production set up shop on the beautiful lawn fronting Central Union Church in lower Manoa.

They’re setting up for a night shoot, and there will apparently be exterior scenes, as crewmembers seem to be inspecting and staging some cars that could appear on screen. No tell-tale signs or props just yet, but a friendly gentleman wiring up a trailer suggested that Jorge Garcia and Naveen Andrews were to be the beneficiaries of his handiwork. (Of course, he only knew them by their general physical descriptions.)

Central Union Church had a brief cameo in an earlier episode of ‘LOST,’ where Locke attended a support group meeting and met Helen in “Orientation” (Season 2, Episode 3).

Dr. Izzie Stevens and Dr. George O'Malley, "Grey's Anatomy's" ew- inducing twosome, take the crown as "TV's Most Annoying Couple," as TV Guide counts down the 10 litle-screen pairs that make viewers cringe.

Katherine Heigl as Izzie and T.R. Knight as George are like "watching a faded prom queen and her slightly dim-witted brother get it on at the expense of George's marriage to Callie," the maggie moans.

"Desperate Housewives' " Tom and Lynette (Doug Savant and Felicity Huffman) rank second on the annoying list. "She has him canned from her ad firm and almost cheats on him with a pizza guy. He takes it as penance for lying about his secret kid," TV Guide says. "The real mystery here is why these two aren't in therapy."

The No. 3 annoyances are retro animated duo Boris and Natasha, followed in order by Clark and Lana (Tom Welling and Kristin Kreuk) of "Smallville" ("We know the Hunk of Steel ends up with Lois . . ."); Billy and Allison (Andrew Shue and Courtney Thorne-Smith) on "Melrose Place"; (#6)Jack and Kate (Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly) on "Lost"; Trista and Ryan Sutter on "The Bachelorette"; Ryan and Marissa (Benjamin McKenzie and Mischa Barton) on "The O.C."; and Sara and Grissom (Jorja Fox and William Petersen) on "C.S.I."

In 10th place is the Hub's own "Boston" Rob Mariano and his bride, Amber Brkich, who, TV Guide says "stunk up two seasons of `The Amazing Race' with their chronic self-promotion" after meeting on "Survivor."

Some Speculation on the New Casting Call

This comes from ODI's Lost spoilers - digging a little deeper into the two new characters Pa posted about earlier. This is speculation, not spoilage. Just the same I put it behind the magic button.

Hey Losties,
It seems like the LOST casting group is adding a couple of more characters for episode 2 for this season.

The earlier casting calls indicated two British characters for episode 2 and 3.

However, today's casting call is quite interesting because it is for two young female "Co-Stars". One of them "plays guitar in her own band" while the other is a "tomboy".

Now if this episode has some British flavor and we see a musically inclined character is this a connection to Charlie!? No it can't be right!? I have always felt the British love would be the Widmore storyline, but any thing is possible including as a DarkUFO reader suggested a potential Geronimo Jackson connection!?

Jorge Garcia is an actor who plays Hugo "Hurley" Reyes in Lost. The following questions were submitted by members of the Lostpedia Forums, and by members of the Lostpedia wiki. This interview was conducted via email.

Lostpedia: You maintain a blog on which you occasionally mention the show. Early on you made some posts to the effect of the studio not being thrilled about the blog and its potential for "spoilers." Obviously, it hasn't been too big of an issue, since you're still posting, but are there any serious restrictions that you're under in your blogging? Are you encouraged to mention the show in your posts, or discouraged to do so?

I started it because I was seeing all of these “fall preview” magazine issues, of with LOST was not a part of, because we weren’t going to be on until the winter. I figured this would keep people buzzing about the show, while they were waiting. But some people were worried that the audience would be able to find spoilers by reading into what I was writing about. So I thought it would cause too much and stopped it. But then a day or so later I decided it might be fun to just do a non-LOST blog.

Lostpedia: It seems to me the character of Hurley was less of a means for comic relief during season 4, and when it was, the humour appeared to be rather cynical. How did you feel about the darker approach the writers have taken with your character?

It was an interesting turn, especially seeing what Hurley had become after being off the island for a while. It gave me some good opportunities to show some other sides of the character. I’m anxious to see what’s next.

Lostpedia: Hurley is a very superstitious person. Can you let us in on any of your greatest superstitions?

Well I inherited my superstitions from my grandmother. You don’t wish anyone a “Happy Birthday” early; it’s bad luck. And you don’t make fun of the dead because they will come into your bedroom at night and tug on your feet.

Lostpedia: The “Hurley bird” was a major mythological mystery in the first two season finales. What is your take on it, and could you give some insight as to how it was described in the script? Speaking of scripts, do you keep your scripts after the episode has been filmed, or do they get put in the trash?

I forgot how it was written in the first finale. I feel the “Hurley” thing came later. I don’t think it was the “Hurley bird” until season two. I keep all of my scripts. I have a collection of binders that have all of my final scripts. I also kept a few scenes that got re-written in major ways to remember the old plots years from now. But they’re packed right now in a box somewhere until I move.
Lostpedia: You've stated in previous interviews that playing computer games is a big hobby of yours. What was your reaction to the game Lost: Via Domus? Would you welcome the opportunity to have a more active hand in any future Lost computer games?

I was a little bummed that they couldn’t come to a deal with us to use our real voices. And my face looked pretty creepy. I don’t know I do about future games. As a rule, games based on movies or TV tend to not be the greatest. I guess it would depend on the concept.

Lostpedia: I have read many theories that suggest Hurley may be the most important character and the "key" to solving some of the biggest mysteries behind ‘Lost’ (i.e. he wasn't supposed to be on the plane). Do you feel that with the deeper, darker Hurley we have been seeing, we might be headed in that direction? If so, how do you feel about carrying the burden of the ultimate outcome?

I like the idea of Hurley being the key to it all, especially if it means job security.

Lostpedia: For me, your Apollo Bar scene with Michael Emerson in ‘Cabin Fever’ was one of the most moving, and memorable single scenes in the four seasons of ‘Lost’ so far. Was that scene scripted? How did Michael Emerson and you approach the scene? What do you feel the "message" of the scene was, and how do you feel about the fan reaction to it?

We’re not thinking message when we’re working. We were excited to do this scene and were having fun trying to find all of the beats in it. On a stage we probably could have stretched it out to twenty minutes. After we had moved on, we found one last beat that we had missed. So as good as the scene was, it was not the best it could have been.

Lostpedia: In the future, Hurley chats with dead people. If you could bring back one actor who has already left the show to become a regular again, who would it be and why?

That depends, would they still be dead? Because I liked the direction Hurley and Libby were going before… you know what happened.

Lostpedia: What was your favorite moment from season four? From an acting standpoint, this season has enabled you to really change things up a bit. How was it adapting to the change? What are your views on Hurley’s apparent connection with the Island, especially after seeing Jacob’s cabin?

I can think of two. Shooting inside the helicopter was a lot of fun. We were having a blast pretending to crash into the ocean. And the moment when Jack visits Hurley in Santa Rosa and he sits there staring at the wall, something happened that felt very exciting. I don’t want to get into the specifics but it felt like there was magic in the scene.

Lostpedia: What do you feel has been the defining moment of Hurley's storyline thus far? From Hurley’s point of view, what has been your favourite season?

Probably the death of the Charlie has had the most effect on him. It’s tough to pick a favorite season. Season one will always be special though.

Lostpedia: How did you feel when you found out Charlie would be killed, as him and Hurley were best friends? How did you approach such a difficult subject to act out? Now that it's over, do you miss your scenes with Dom?

Sure I miss playing Scrabble on Dom’s phone between takes. What I liked the most was that Hurley had no idea what was happening when Charlie went on the boat. It kept the moment from being too precious. Like the moment when all Hurley can tell Libby when she’s dying is that he’s sorry he forgot the blankets.

Lostpedia: What makes you stick to this series, when your role could have spring-boarded you to other long-term projects? Do you follow through until the series' end because they want to see where it goes, or because you enjoy the character you play?

Well I am contractually obligated to continue on LOST. But more importantly I love my job. I live in Hawaii and work on a show that’s not like anything else on TV.

Lostpedia: If you had the opportunity, what is the one thing about the show (in an episode, season, or series as a whole) you would change?
The snack jokes.

Lostpedia: What’s your least favourite thing about the show and the process of making it (if you have one)?

One of the physically hardest things to do on LOST is marching on the beach. Usually when you walk on the beach you’re in sandals and your leisurely strolling. But to march with purpose over a great distance. That’s a bitch.

Lostpedia: In your first audition, you read the part of Sawyer. What was it about that role that appealed to you? Were you flattered that Damon and JJ wanted you in it so much, they wrote in Hurley specifically for you? How did the audition process work?

When I went in they knew that wanted to meet me but they didn’t have material for me. So they had me read Sawyer. I wasn’t really auditioning for the part. But then they wrote scenes for me to test with at the studio and then network levels. At this point I was the only guy auditioning for Hurley in the room. Later I learned they basically created the part for me. And that makes you feel pretty special.

Lostpedia: As an actor where would you like to take your career after ‘Lost’? Do you ever watch the show when an episode is finally cut and completed, and, if so, how does it feel to see those scenes from a 3rd person perspective?

I still have to figure out what I want to do after LOST. It doesn’t matter too much so long as the material is good. I watch the show when it airs. I like to watch it because stuff can change in the editing and always like to see how the effects turn out.

Lostpedia: What was your favorite show growing up? What/who influenced you personally to begin acting?

I remember liking ALF when I was younger. But as a kid I think it’s the Indiana Jones movies that first made me want to be an actor.

First there's Darlene, a bored clerk who hates her lame-ass job and looks for any burst of excitement to get through her day. She'll be joined by Jill, a highly confident and tough-as-nails butcher. What's up, Doc Jensen? "Dude, Darlene sounds like 'Dharma Initiative recruit circa hippie-era seventies' to me. And Jill could be the lunch counter lady that serves the good-for-you organic slop in the Dharma mess hall." Um, no offense Doc, but that much was obvious.

Is Beach Camp a Goner?

One of our sources went over to the LOST Beach Camp site to see if there was any new activity and well there is nothing new. As a matter of fact there is no camp or tents either!? As far as I can remember in previous off-seasons the tents were left up and then fixed up.

Why would they remove the tents?? Is it something to do with the Island disappearing? Will they make a new camp site?

If anyone else has gone to the site recently or has more information please let us know.

Aloha!

Went to the site where they film the beach camp scenes, only there was no camp set up! However, the "set" was still fenced off and there was a security guard beyond the trees. I'm assuming that this means they took the "tents" down during the break and will set up again when they begin filming the beach scenes.

Update: 15:30 After chatting with some people it looks like this article is really discussing Season 4 and NOT season 5. Sorry to all those Mira fans, it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer to find out more of her story

Update: 15:00 Thanks to Jake and Josh, it now appears there is some confusion in the article/translation in that it's unclear if they are referring to Season 4 or 5 of Lost as Lost is about to start showing Season 4 in Croatia. We'll try to find out more and keep you updated.

Thanks to DarkUFO reader Lenka for the following which seems to suggest that we'll be seeing more of Mira (aka Danielle) in Season 5 in what we can only assume are some flashbacks, hopefully involving her arrival on the Island along with her killing her team.

I am living in Croatia, and constantly reading darkufo web page. So I don't know if it is interesting, at one of the web portals in Croatia announced today that Mira Furlan is back at Lost, season 5.

It basically says that producers gave her wider permanent part, very important role in story of the new season, and it has everything to do with the background ( history) of island.

Latest Set Report

Some spoiler-lite reporting from Dark UFO and their sources:

Read into it what you will, but Alan Dale has joined the cast of the ITV show Moving Wallpaper. The series is set to be broadcast "in early 2009," which suggests about the same time as Lost, meaning their filming schedules will be similar.

Just a hunch, but reports of UK filming at Heathrow are likely true as Dale would once again need to be in the UK to film his other projects, so therefore would probably have to film any Widmore scenes in the UK.

It was a long day on the job for the “LOST” crew… and for a bunch of lucky extras. One of them was disappointed to miss a party tonight, but only a little disappointed. So I gather from a cryptic e-mail forwarded this afternoon. Instead of a potluck dish, he had to scrounge up a “rollerbag,” because he had to catch a flight on Oceanic Airlines.

I wasn’t able to check out the Hawaii Convention Center, which has ably stood in for an airport many times before, but this time there’s a twist. The subject line? “Heathrow.”

Is Locke a Goner?

Thanks to Surly for the following. Should we worry about this comment from Terry over at the Fuselage or was it just a throw away line? I for one would hope that Locke stays as a major character till at least towards the end of Season 6.

Hi Rachel,
I never expect anything to do well, regardless of its quality. No one can predict what will catch on and what will not. I hoped it'd do well, but had no expectations..........the same applies to my involvement; in fact, there's some question as to whether I'll go the rest of the way
I prefer theater for the kick...............film and t.v. for the money. Theater's definitely more fun.

Talking With Henry Ian Cusick

Fans know him as Desmond Hume. But his real name is Henry Ian Cusick, the actor who brings Desmond to life each week on ABC's hit series, "Lost."

Cusick joined the cast as a regular during the drama's third season. Since then, he has been nominated for an Emmy Award and has seen his character, a Scotsman with a penchant for time travel, develop a solid fan following. (Yes, it was Desmond who won washingtonpost.com's "Lost" Madness competition.) In addition to "Lost," Cusick has appeared on Fox's "24," in the movie "Hitman," and in numerous plays in the UK.

Cusick wase online Friday, April 25 at 1:30 p.m. ET to answer questions about "Lost" and his career.

Did you know when you started on "Lost" that your gig was going to last this long and you were going to become such an important character? Or did your role just develop along the way? I am guessing the technical aspects of it left some of emotion out that we were all carrying while watching the episode. But if I may say, it was incredibly compelling, beautifully acted, and a favorite moment of the show so far, for me and many others as a result.

Though Desmond hasn't been with "Lost" from the beginning, his storyline is the most touching and powerful, and it seems like he's on the greatest personal journey out of all of the show's characters. And how do you as an actor generate the emotional impact that Desmond has on screen? -- i.e. Do you feel it's the result of a great team effort -- an amalgamation of the writing, the score, and the performance you deliver on a constant (pun intended) basis?

My question is, do you and your fellow male actors in Lost compete to see who can become the most buff? I'm sure there's a positive correlation between an episode's ratings and how many minutes it features Sawyer, Sayid or Desmond shirtless. Because of course the more muscular your character is, the longer the creators will have to keep your character alive!

McLean, Va.: Given your stage background, do you find it jarring or difficult to get only two days or so with the script before shooting, instead of having weeks of rehearsal?

Along those lines, how would you compare knowing and learning the entire plot at once (as when doing a play) as opposed to learning only bits and pieces as you go along? How does this affect your approach to your performance, character interpretation, etc.?

Henry Ian Cusick: Great question. Trust. I trust the writers and directors and editors and just play everything line by line, scene by scene. It's a great learning curve for me and although i am not in the writers room, we are working together...

So you already know that Chloe and Davis aka Doomsday will have a bit of romantic chemistry. And this comes into play in episode six, when a bunch of corpses start turn up, the work of an unknown serial killer. Clark suspects Davis, but Chloe insists Davis is innocent, and the friends have a falling out over it. Clark's case is strengthened by the fact that Davis has a blackout whenever a new victim turns up. [EW]

Assorted news and mild casting spoilage for our favorite plane crash survivors. Do not fear the spoilers as long as you are ok with finding out some more casting and story speculation - I leave you to the magic button below.

Another new character joining the cast of island-castaway show Lost: Martha, a smart, attractive Asian-American scientist who's taking time off to raise her baby. And there's speculation that she may be the wife of Marvin Candle aka Pierre Chang, and the mother of the crying baby we heard in his video that was shown at Comic-Con. [EW]

Also, the first episode of the season will include another new character, a construction foreman in his 40s or 50s. He's worked hard to get where he is and to provide for his family. He cares about his crew and hates it when the management is condescending or arrogant, but ultimately he knows his place in the pecking order. [Doc Arzt]

Meanwhile, speculation is increasing that those two new British characters we mentioned the other day are part of a storyline involving the Black Rock, the 19th century slave ship that crashed on the island. (The one whose First Mate's journal Charles Widmore purchased at auction.) And now it turns out the show is trying to hire a "big black ominous looking ship," plus another ship to chase it. So far, the show has hired the "chase ship," which looks old enough to be from the 1500s. The show will film these sequences in September, off the coast of California.

Also, at the show's open casting call over the weekend, one bald African American man was singled out for special attention and asked about his experience. And the casting people were interested in people who could speak any foreign language. They also wanted kids, but especially any boys who were blond haired and blue eyed, from babies to five-year-olds. What does it all mean? [Lost Spoilers]

Meanwhile, a trustworthy source (named "Super Sock") claims the first episode of the season is about "several" of the Ocanic Six already coming to terms with their need to return to the island, on their own terms. And the title, "Because You Left," refers not to one character but several characters, in different ways. [Doc Arzt again]

Also, filming on the first episode is already underway, including scenes at the house where Kate lives after leaving the island. Seen on set were a man in a doctor's coat, and a blond toddler, who looked around two years old. But no sign of Kate herself. Could Aaron be sick? Matt: Maja, this is an excellent question. I even rewatched the season finale to confirm my own POV: "Why would we ever see Dez again?" I mean, he and Penny reconnected just before sending the Oceanic Six on their (actually not-so-)merry way. However... I have it on good authority that Henry Ian Cusick is still a part of the cast, and that Sonya Walger is likely to resurface as well. As one setsider reminds me, "Just like when people die on Lost and you see them again, just because everyone reunited doesn’t mean you've seen the last of them."

Open Casting Call

Hey All,One of our readers in Hawaii happened to make it to the open casting call that was held over the weekend.

In addition to the Spanish speaking people, it seems like the casting people were actually looking for any one who knew a foreign language and it seems like the producers might be searching for several different Aarons!?



NOTE: In the first picture I tried to screencap the person that apparently the casting people were "VERY" interested in. It is not the one sleeping in the chair, but the bald guy in the background. Click the image to enlarge it.Check it out!As you can tell there was a very diverse showing of people. Anyways, if you look to the very right of the picture, there is a black man in a tan button up shirt- that's the guy that was pulled aside and asked about his experience. The casting person was VERY interested in him.

The second picture is where we entered into the cafeteria to fill out a form and have our headshot taken by some staffers. From showing up to walking out the door, it took us 2.5 hours for the whole experience!

I read on your page that someone said at the open casting call they were looking for Spanish speaking individuals. I can speak Spanish and had that on my "resume" so I'll let you know if I get a call back ;) I never heard that they were specifically looking for Spanish speaking. They could also be searching for Japanese/Korean due to the Jin/Sun storyline. All they said at the casting call is that they were looking for ANY foreign language.

Here's a bit of info- a man besides us got pulled out of line to answer some questions about his skills. He was a bald, black man. Strange how they zeroed in on him. That's the only one I saw get special attention.There were many children there and those who were boys, blond hair, blue eyes were of special interest- NO MATTER WHAT AGE. I saw some as old as about 5 and down to the babies being photographed.

If I hear of anything, I'll be sure to let you know.

LOST Producers Looking for two huge props!

Yup that is right Losties.

Yesterday, we posted a little report from SecretAgentMan (SAM), who is a very reliable source for LOST Spoilers, saying that he had a "feeling" about a potential flash back for the Black Rock.

Well today we received some more information that seems to actually confirm SAM's feeling.One of our sources from the local marina here in Los Angeles just provided us with some information that the LOST producers are in the process of looking for a "big black ominous looking ship". Not only are they looking for this ship, but also booked a "chase" ship that will go after the black one..!!

We are hoping to get some pictures, but here is an image that was sent over of some similar boats that they were looking at. Also below is the message we received:The Lost producers are looking for two ships, both need to be seaworthy. The main one they wanted was a big black ominous looking ship, but the ship company didn't have anything that was even remotely similar to what they described. However, they booked another ship and it's going to be a chase ship which goes after the big black one.

The chase ship is the oldest ship in the marina and it looks like it's from the 1500's. Do you know why they would want boats that looked to be several hundred years old?

They want to film out in the Pacific off the California coast in early September.Source:

‘LOST’ is Rolling

SPOILER ALERT! Like the first blooms of spring, there’s always something heartwarming about spotting the first location shoot of a new season of “Lost.” Cameras started rolling this morning for Episode 5×01, “Because You Left,” in Kahala in East Honolulu. Shooting took place inside the private residence off Onaha Street that serves as Kate’s post-island home.

There were no sightings of Evangeline Lilly, but a couple of reports trickled in after I stopped by. One, a man in a doctor’s coat, and two, a blond toddler that “couldn’t have been older than two.” Could baby Aaron’s health post-rescue require a house call? Or did my sources just happen to spot random visitors to the set? We’ll have to wait until February to find out.

Elsewhere in Honolulu, a second unit was lensing a scene requiring a group of Spanish speakers. I know this only because of loose lips at the open casting call on Saturday. Where they were, and what they were doing, remains a mystery. If you live on the island and spot “LOST” at work, drop me a line!

Top TV shows rip up old blueprint Emmy-nommed series able to embrace change

Compare a recent episode of NBC's "30 Rock" to the pilot episode, and it almost seems like a different show. Do that in front of "30 Rock" creator-exec producer Tina Fey, and she's likely to cringe.

"If I never see that pilot again, it will be too soon," Fey says of her series' first episode. "Pilots are difficult. I'd never written a pilot script before, and I was by myself, trying to figure out how to do this."

Fortunately, the pilot process typically involves a learning curve, and "30 Rock" is just one show to evolve from its original blueprint.

"We changed a few things. We changed a couple of actors, but that's not a reflection on them," Fey says. "One thing we figured out that's been important to me is that no matter how elastic and insane their world is, crazy things can happen to these people, but the people must be real at their core and care about each other."

Despite the early adjustments, Fey says it wasn't until the episode "Tracy Does Conan" that the showmakers discovered the breakneck pace that's become a trademark of "30 Rock," which led all primetime weekly series this year with 17 Emmy nominations.

Other shows ad lib their approach because of budget, especially in the case of basic cable series like FX's Emmy-nommed "Damages."

"We didn't have the money to build an office in the pilot for Ray Fiske (Emmy nominee Zeljko Ivanek), so we decided we'd pick him up wherever he happened to be in his life," says "Damages" co-creator and co-executive producer Todd A. Kessler. They showed the attorney on his cell phone and even holding meetings at a dog park.

"It actually lent a great deal of character to Fiske," Kessler adds, "and made it seem that he was always out doing things as opposed to just being in his office. We ended up building an office when we got ordered for a series, but it was a great way -- just by necessity -- to establish his character. ... If we had to do it again (with a bigger budget), we'd probably opt to do the same thing."

Sara Colleton, co-executive producer of Showtime's "Dexter," learned that high-quality work can be done quickly, on budget -- even through hurricanes.

"Coming from a world where there are 60 shooting days, seeing what you're able to do in eight is a revelation," she says.

Gradual development of Dexter's character helped viewers adjust to the concept of a serial-killer protagonist: "From the beginning, we knew it was going to be a slow and steady process. If we kept it true, (viewers) would come."

With one of the largest pilot budgets ever, money wasn't an issue for "Lost," which returned to the Emmy drama finals this year after a two-year absence. Co-creator and exec producer Damon Lindelof says the show developed atypically, effectively "dodging" pilot season.

"We didn't really have a lot of time before the pilot to think about what the show was going to be either creatively or in production," he says. "For that period, it was just organized chaos."

They quickly learned that given the large cast, "Lost" had to be character-driven, so they implemented the now-famous flashbacks to illuminate each character's pre-island life.

Fellow executive producer Carlton Cuse says another key was approaching "Lost" with few expectations: "Before it even premiered, people thought it was a fantastic pilot, but there were enormous concerns about whether it had viability as a series. That gave us the freedom to try things and break conventional rules because we really thought it was going to be 12 episodes and out. With that license, we did things differently than other shows, and that helped establish the unique things that define 'Lost.' "

For AMC's "Mad Men," which joined "Damages" and "Dexter" as rookie drama nominees, the biggest lessons involved keeping the period piece real. "This is the hallmark of our entire philosophy, which we learned early on," showrunner Matthew Weiner says.

Lindelof says one thing remains the same for any show in development: "Sometimes you have to forgo your initial plan and either enhance it or completely cut bait."

Time was big factor in why 'Lost' was found

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — On multiple occasions in this column, yours truly has written that "Lost" took a sudden turn for the better.

That, once an end date was announced, the show quickly became much more watchable. Actually, that it stopped being unwatchable after a second season that drove viewers away by the millions.

I'm not the only one who thinks so.

"That made all the difference in the world," executive producer Carlton Cuse said. "We now basically knew exactly how much time we had left to tell our story, and we were basically able to blast towards that ending. I think that really completely changed our storytelling approach."

And made it much more pleasant at my house during and after each episode of "Lost." Because I no longer sit there and complain (to put it nicely) about how I'm wasting my time watching it.

In a way, the producers of "Lost" were given an impossible task. After the show's big first-season success, everyone wanted to keep the gravy train rolling as long as they could. And "Lost" isn't a soap opera that could keep rolling pretty much endlessly.

It was as if the show's writers were told to keep writing chapters for the middle of a novel built around a single premise, putting off the action and the ending for as long as possible.

Not exactly the makings of a best seller.

And, by the way, we've got two more 17-episode seasons to look forward to.

"We just feel fortunate that we know exactly how much more time we have," Cuse said.

THE PRODUCERS aren't taking anything for granted, however. With their second-to-last season coming up in early 2009, they know the pressure is on.

"This obviously is a tricky year for us," said Cuse, who compared the 2009 season to the second book in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"It's like 'The Two Towers.' I mean, this is the year that links us from the past to the final season," he said.

And that final season is when the pressure will really be turned up.

"We're very excited about it, and we've known a lot of what we wanted to do there for a long time," Cuse said. "So, really, the challenge for us ... is how do we make this season engaging and exciting and really put us in a place where everyone is really excited about the final season of 'Lost."'

WHEN IT COMES TO impossible tasks on television, it's hard to imagine one any more impossible than what the "Lost" writers are facing.

They've got to come up with a series finale that:

• Merges all the timelines.

• Answers every question.

• Answers questions in a way that makes sense (within the reality the show has created).

• Satisfies viewers.

• Comes up, at the same time, with an ending that will be both exciting and surprising.

• Does all this when viewer expectations will be off the charts.

It's possible, although it doesn't seem likely. When you look back at the history of highly anticipated series finales, more often than not they've proved disappointing.

And this one will be harder to pull off than most.

"We feel the worst thing that we could ever do on the show is for the show to be boring," executive producer Damon Lindelof said (apparently forgetting about Season 2). "And we've always said, 'If we're going to be bad, we're going to be spectacularly bad.' And it's a show that takes risks."

There's huge potential for something that will go down in TV history. Whether it will go down as one of its greatest triumphs or greatest failures ... well, we'll find out in the spring of 2010.

THE "LOST" PRODUCERS rejected (rightfully) criticism that, by killing off Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), they're lessening diversity on TV by eliminating a Korean character.

"Because the show wasn't set in the states and because it featured people who were on a plane, and anybody could be on a plane, it opened the door for not just ethnically diverse casting, but people from all over the world," Lindelof said. "But at the same time, the show, in many ways has to be an equal opportunity murderer. ... We've killed a lot of white people.

"I can almost guarantee you we will be killing more white people this season. But nobody ever asks us about it."

Of course, this is "Lost," so we're never really sure who's dead. And being dead doesn't necessarily mean a character won't return to the show at some point.

"There will be more of Daniel Dae Kim in the series in some form," Cuse said.

"In human form," Lindelof quipped.

GOOD ANSWER: Cuse was asked an obvious question that he obviously is never going to answer — when are most of the characters in "Lost" going to get off that island and when are the two timelines in the narrative going to merge?

"By the end," he said.
