'Lost' season premiere: We've seen it!

Dec 30, 2008, 12:30 PM by Jeff Jensen

Yesterday. 9:30 a.m. I was moments away from spending the day at Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth, when a certain EW colleague, whose name rhymes with Shmichael Slausiello, tipped me off that the first two episodes of Lost’s fifth season were now available to lucky media dorks like me for reviewing. Suddenly, the House of Mouse (and really, any other locale that wasn’t my laptop DVD player) was not the happiest place on Earth, but the most hellishly inconvenient. ARRRRGHHH! A long day of standing in life-stealing, long-ass lines became even more criminal and assish as I counted the minutes before I could rip into the most awesome of delayed Christmas presents. (Although I must say, The Pirates of the Carrbbean -- a masterpiece of experiential narrative on any other day -- was almost compelling enough to distract me from my furious angst. ALMOST.)

Finally, at 10 p.m. last night, with exhausted family passed out, I sat down and broke the seven-month Lost fast with the first two helpings of season 5. Both went down well, one more so than the other. A few thoughts in advance of a more thorough discussion to come, once the episodes air and we're all on the same page.

Episode 5x01 Because You Left - Plot Details

Hey All,

A recent article posted on a local Chicago news site, Sun Times' Pioneer Local has posted several details about the LOST Season 5 premiere Episode 5x01 Because You Left. The article claims that ABC has the whole premiere on their media site and posted a review of the details. Now most of the details are from previous spoilers but there are some new items.

For many these details could be consider as major spoilers and I am putting them behind a button just in case.

Here is a little summary, enjoy!!

Thanks to Sarah for the heads up.

Australia's the Key to the Whole Game

When the latest Ajira Airways link came out, I took the time to look at the website closely - hoping for clues.  There may be many, but the one I settled on was the scroll in the middle of the page where it says we can discover characters and ancient secrets in the Outback.  That led me back to the S4 episode where Hurley, Sawyer and Locke were playing RISK (I think) and where Hurley said "Australia's the key to the whole game."  The 2 things seemed to related to leave alone, so I did some research into the matter.

To me the Ancient Outback would be before the British colony, so I settled on the Aboriginies.  So it seemed to me, being a fan of the mythological aspect of the show, the best research would come from searching for Aboriginal Mythology.

Aboriginal mythology is somewhat diffferent from what we understand as mythology.  Gods and humans, struggles, wars, conquests, incest - that's not really what this mythology is about.  It's more about the land and how everything is connected through the land.

To relate this to LOST I'll insert notes along the way of what I found in Wikipedia.

Aboriginal Mythology describes the journeys of ancestral beings, often giant animals or people, over what began as a featureless domain. Mountains, rivers, waterholes, animal and plant species, and other natural and cultural resources came into being as a result of events which took place during these Dreamtime journeys.

Note - The journey of ancestors could be the father figure element, giant animals or people could relate to 4-toe, and the landscape features pretty much describe the island.

Dreaming is a common term for a personal or group creation, and for what may be understood as the "timeless time" of formative creation and perpetual creating, as well as for the places and localities on Indigenous Australian traditional land where the uncreated creation spirits and totemic ancestors reside. The Dreaming can be seen as an embodiment of creation which gives meaning to everything.

Note - timeless time?

One could say that the Dreaming is a spiritual realm which saturates the visible world with meaning; that it is the matrix of being; that it was the time of creation; that it is a parallel universe which may be contacted via the ritual performance of song, dance and painting; that it is a network of stories of heroes – the forerunners and creators of contemporary man.

Note - this could tie in the parallel universe theory without there actually being a parallel universe.

During the creation period, the ancestral beings made journeys and performed deeds; they fought, loved, hunted, behaved badly or well, rather like the Greek gods, and where they camped or hurled spears or gave birth, tell-tale marks were left in the earth. While creating this topography, they were morphing constantly from animal to human and back to animal.  At the end of that epoch, exhausted by their work, they sank back into the ground at sacred sites, where their power remains in condensed forms.

Note - different locations with special powers?

It is not quite right, however, to say that the creation period is in the past, because it is a past that is eternal and therefore also present. In other words, an ancestor's journey, or story, became a place, and that place holds past, present and future simultaneously.  Time sinks into place, into Country.

Note - a place that holds the past, present and future simultaneously?  And that place holds the secrets to our ancestors journeys?  Sounds familiar to me.

Of the Murrinh-Patha people it's been observed the Dreamtime is in fact a religious belief equivalent to most of the world's other significant religious beliefs.  In particular, it has been suggested the Murrinh-patha have a oneness of thought, belief, and expression unequalled within Christianity, which sees all aspects of their lives, thoughts and culture as under the continuing influence of their Dreaming.

Within this Aboriginal religion, no distinction is drawn between things spiritual/ideal/mental and things material; nor is any distinction drawn between things sacred and things profane: rather all life is 'sacred', all conduct has 'moral' implication, and all life's meaning arises out of this eternal, everpresent Dreaming.

Note - so we are to learn from all things sacred and profane...such as a con man, a defeated criple or a priest impostor trying to regain his lost way.

Animating and sustaining this Murrinh-patha mythology, is an underlying philosophy of life that has been characterised by one of Australia's most influential writers as a belief that life is "...a joyous thing with maggots at its centre". Life is good and benevolent, but throughout life's journey there are numerous painful sufferings that each individual must come to understand and endure as they grow.

The Dreaming provides a moral authority lying outside the individual will and outside human creation. These human creations are objectified into principles or precedents for the immediate world. Consequently, current action is not understood as the result of human alliances, creations, and choices, but is seen as imposed by an embracing, cosmic order.

Note - fate = imposed cosmic order.

If we are to believe this is the show's prime directive, and we can all agree fate versus choice has been a constant theme, it would seem that my comment of "we are who we are due to the choices we've made" might not be correct in the show's view.  It would seem they are trying to tell us we are fated to become who we are regardless of the choices we make.  That destiny supercedes chance.

We know those that left the island are destined to go back, and that's a good show theme.  On a personal/reality level, I hope they are wrong.

Top 20 TV Moments Of 2008

This year in TV was jam-packed with climactic kisses, deaths and waffles. Here's our video roundup of our favorite moments, silly and serious, from 2008 TV.

Compilation 1:

Chuck - Smooch - "Chuck Versus The Ex"
John Casey (Adam Baldwin) is the best part of Chuck and makes the floppy-haired nerd boy tolerable.

True Blood - How To Kill A Vampire - "Plaisir d'amour
Didn't know that the rule of "if you throw up, then I'm going to throw up" applies to vampires.

Doctor Who - Cyberman Transformer - "The Next Doctor"
Jesus H Christ that's cool.

Lost - I Said All Of You - "There's No Place Like Home: Part 2"
Who knew being in a coffin could be so intimidating?

Fringe - First Walterism - "Pilot"
That is the sound of a new era of science funny, crazy-style.

Sarah Connor Chronicles - Crazy Future Ladies - "Strange Things Happen at the One Two Point"
All the ladies from the future put your hands up!

Eureka - Bye Bye Nathan - "I Do Over"
I complained about Nathan's exit on this show the first time around, but it's really grown on me after watching it a few more times.

Eleventh Hour - Flesh Eating STDs - "Spring Break Sucks"
Flesh eating STDs totally ruined my spring break, too.

The Office - Dumbledore Calrissian - "Business Ethics"
Funniest science fiction joke of the season.

Stargate Atlantis - Nerd Love, McKay Style - "Brain Storm"

The nerd gets the girl.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles - Derek Blows Our Minds - "Complications"
Wait, what? How many times did you rewind this part?

Battlestar Galactica - Cally Air Locked - "The Ties That Bind"
GOOD RIDDANCE. Thank you, RDM, for delivering what I needed.

True Blood - Sad Dancing For Drugs - "Escape from Dragon House"
Sparked a whole revolution of sad underwear dancing.

Compilation 2:
Dr. Who - Kiss Goodbye - "Journey's End"
Why can't I meet a man like the Doctor? Best kiss, because it kept the real Doctor at bay, and Rose off in another dimension (not that I don't love her — I'm just ready for some new blood).

Life On Mars - Sam Teaches Black Panthers About Vanilla Ice - "Things to Do in New York When You Think You're Dead"
Sam, you are the man.

Smallville - Doomsday Ruins Lame Wedding - "Bride"
Only thing worth watching on Smallville this season so far: Sam Witwer as Doomsday.

Battlestar Galactica - Finding Earth - "Revelations"
You made a wrong turn at Saturn.

Heroes - Waffles! - "I Am Become Death"
Surprise — I'm creepier when I act normal!

Venture Brothers - OSI Song
Big "Tah Dah" moment.

Lost - World's Best Phone Conversation - "The Constant"
My favorite episode of the season — just a beautiful example of a great pay-off after a long, long, long wait for these two lovers.

New Dharma Letter

Happy New Year all you Dharma folk!

We hope you are enjoying your holiday season. We are. Our shooting crew is on hiatus for another week, so we are enjoying a little semi-down time, hanging out with our families, reading books, doing a little writing on some upcoming episodes, and getting caught up on TOP CHEF, which is sort of an obsession of ours.

We didn't get a chance to answer even a fraction of all the great questions submitted, so we're back this week with yet another Q & A. We promise you the most obfuscation you've ever seen in a short segment of video.

Click on the link below and enter the password to check it out.

We also saw this really interesting new commercial we wanted to share with you. Hmmm. Very curious indeed... Anybody know anything about this airline?

Back to you next week. Ring in the New Year safely. No DUIs, okay?

Peace and blessings,

Damon and Carlton

Henry Ian Cusick interviewed by ABC

John Locke TV Guide's Most Shocking Death of 2008

'Lost' star Kim donates 500 toys to Toys for Tots

A star on the TV series "Lost" has helped the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots Hawai'i program make up a shortfall in needed toys, but the Marines are hoping for one last bit of generosity on the final two days before Christmas.

Chuck Little, a Marine Forces Pacific spokesman, said the need has been met for every age group except for boys and girls ages 8 to 10, and boys and girls 11 and older.

"We're about 1,600 toys shy of being able to meet the need," Little said. "We're really concerned about making sure that everyone that requested donations gets something this year."

A collection point for the Marines managed by the Salvation Army will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 8 a.m. until noon Wednesday on the Costco side of Dole Cannery, Little said. "Lost" star Daniel Dae Kim and his wife donated 500 toys yesterday to the Toys for Tots campaign at Kahala Mall.

"To say that (contribution) is overwhelming is a gross understatement," Little said. "That will go a long way towards helping meet the remaining need this year."

Little said the Toys for Tots program has collected about 30,000 toys this year. For more information about the last two days for drop off, call 216-4851.

Elizabeth Mitchell for Alternative Apparel

Alternative Apparel recently launched a line of 100% organic cotton garments, including the best fitting, most comfortable t-shirts imaginable! I recently worked on a shoot for their new Earth line with actress Elizabeth Mitchell, aka Dr. Juliet Burke on the ABC television series LOST. It was a quick shoot since she was heading back to Hawaii in the morning to begin the next season of filming. Photographer Michael Oneil did a great job finding the most perfect set ups her back yard and around her house. She was a dream to work with, so so sweet and beautiful(inside and out!). It was a fun day.

Top 12 TV characters of 2008 -- misers, gangsters, killers, cops

By Jennifer Thomason December 19, 2008 6:52 PM

Making lists is always dangerous, but it's just so darn fun. And while 2008 might not have been the best year for television, that didn't stop it from having its share of characters who continue to captivate on the small screen -- some of them having break-out performances this season. So here's a run at the Top 12 TV characters of 2008. Who were your favorites this year?

7. Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) -- "Lost"

Just when we thought we knew Ben as a power-obsessed dictator, it turns out he might have a less devious agenda after all. Or does he? Michael Emerson does a fine job of keeping everyone guessing, and he's one of the reasons "Lost" was able to reinvigorate itself. Plus, there's Ben's dry humor, his moments of bug-eyed homicidal tirades and the fact that he's the perfect foil for John Locke (Terry O'Quinn).

'Lost' boss "concerned" about cast split

Friday, December 5 2008, 15:00 GMT
By Ben Rawson-Jones, Cult Editor

Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof has admitted that the show's bosses are concerned about the effects of splitting up the characters.

The fourth season revealed the identities of the Oceanic Six through flashforwards, a group which manages to leave the island and return home - leaving the rest behind.

The repercussions for the fifth season led Lindelof to tell Sci Fi Wire: "We're concerned... I think everyone, writers and fans alike, feels the show is at its best when our characters are together, but the fact of the matter is that the story is constantly twisting and turning to keep them apart."

Lindelof also suggested that the split may only be a temporary measure that will work in the show's favour. "Let's face it, absence makes the heart grow fonder, but there's nothing sweeter than a reunion. All we're willing to say at this point is that if we were to spend the entire duration of season five with the Oceanic Six trying to get back to the island, we are fully aware that the audience would strangle us."
