Local actors get splashy roles on small screen
POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Oct 31, 2008
Two popular television shows this week featured former Hawaii residents. Actor Blake Kushi landed a guest-starring role on ABC's Emmy Award-winning "Pushing Daisies," playing a manager of a Chinese restaurant. Born and raised in Hilo, Kushi graduated from Waiakea High School and received music and theater degrees from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. His background includes improv work and stints at Manoa Valley Theatre, Diamond Head Theatre and Kumu Kahua Theatre. Living in Los Angeles for four years helped Kushi earn gigs on cable TV and a role in a feature film about Bruce Lee. But this was his first network job.
Kushi isn't Chinese, but that "wasn't a problem for me or the director or anyone on the production," he said via phone. "It was a nonissue. The only part that worried me was having lines in Mandarin Chinese." Thankfully, they provided a dialect coach during the six-day shoot in August.
Kushi anticipates this will be a stepping stone for his career. "I'm hoping to build upon this and have a stronger resume so I can be considered for bigger roles."
In the incomprehensibly zany household of Jon and Kate Gosselin, Jon (originally from Hawaii) and Kate prepared to travel to the islands to renew their vows with their twins and sextuplets (nice touch: he wore a kukui-nut lei throughout the episode). And, yes, they needed a bus to get to the airport! Stay tuned for the next installment of "Jon and Kate Plus 8," which airs on TLC. Check listings at http://tlc.discovery.com/ ...
How about a reality show that tests your filmmaking and blogging skills -- in two languages? "Aloha Challenge," a seven-episode educational series that premieres at 8 p.m. next Friday on KIKU-TV, starts with eight semi-bilingual college interns. Four hail from Japan; the others are American. To win the grand prize of $10,000 and the title of "Top Producer" in a competition to produce the best blogs and short films about Hawaii, teams must collaborate and communicate while barely speaking each other's languages. High school students also are involved.
"Aloha Challenge" has multicultural, bilingual and multimedia qualities, according to Lorenzo Wyatt, the show's executive producer and host. Wyatt, who lived in Japan for several years and recruited students to come to Hawaii to participate, also wrote an English/kanji curriculum to accompany the show. "If you give students something to do where they have to problem-solve, it means you're going to have to explain things you don't have the language for," Wyatt said. The first episode deciphers the complex game and introduces the players. From then on, personalities and plenty of drama emerge. Said Wyatt: "We could not have gotten a better group of students for this production." Visit http://www.alohachallenge.tv/. ...
I stumbled upon the "Lost" crew filming a New York City scene in downtown Honolulu this week. Taxis were adorned with N.Y.C., and extras wore suits and coats in various shades of gray and black. Stars included Terry O'Quinn (John Locke) and Malcolm David Kelley (Walt) -- together! It got me excited for the new season, which can't come soon enough.

Ben, Abaddon & Walt
Another day of filming: a chunk of Honolulu got converted into Manhattan's Upper West Side for a street scene, including the Columbus & 67th street subway station, some New York cabs, some news racks, and an antique rug store, established 1902. The scene seemed to revolve around a Honolulu prep school, converted into the Fieldcroft School, with a black limo parked out front.
The scene involved Ben, Locke, Abaddon and... Walt! OMG Walt! Ryan with Hawaii Blog missed the parts with Ben, but saw a scene where Walt and Locke (still in a wheelchair) talked across the street from the school. Eventually, some kids near the school entrance call Walt over, and Abaddon helps Locke into the back of a Lincoln Town Car. Locke has a blue cast on his leg, but can "hobble" over to the car. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Mitchell will be busier than ever in the new season of Lost... but it remains to be seen if she's getting busy with Sawyer. [TV Guide]

Various Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT! “LOST” returned to Oahu Cemetery this morning, perhaps a fitting location on the brink of Halloween. The historic graveyard previously appeared in the Season 2 episode “Lockdown,” as the not-quite-final resting place of Anthony Cooper. It seemed, at first, a peaceful scene, with Matthew Abbadon (Lance Reddick) bringing a wheelchair-bound John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) to a modest gravesite for an intense conversation. But things turned quickly when it came time to leave. Locke, in the back seat of a blue four-door sedan (I’d guess it was a late model Mercury Grand Marquis), waited as Abbadon loaded his wheelchair into the trunk. But no sooner had Abbadon closed the lid, when shots rang out. And Abbadon is hit.Who’s gunning for Abbadon? And whose grave were they visiting?source : ryan's blog
I have this nagging feeling that Lost from here on will focus on the Oceanic 6, at the expense of the people - my Sawyer included! - left on the island. Please tell me I'm wrong. - Lauren
Matt: I take great pleasure in telling you that you are wrong. I then laugh derisively in your general direction. Have no fear, Lauren, the left-behinders will get plenty of air time. In fact, a (probably well-tanned) setsider tells me that Elizabeth Mitchell, for one, has never had more to do and as such is busier than a one-armed paperhanger. But is she getting busy with Your Sawyer? That's the question.source : tv guide
Question: I need to know what night and time Lost is on starting in Jan. '09. I need to select which evenings I'm teaching next semester, and I prefer to watch Lost live, not on DVR two hours later. -- Rosamaria
Ausiello: No decision has been made yet, but my gut is telling me it'll return to Thursdays at 10 pm. In related news, remember my scoop last week about Lance Reddick returning for an episode?
Well, my Hawaii mole reports that he was shooting scenes in a hospital with Charles Widmore. Theorizes Doc Jensen: "If you believe, as I do, that Charles Widmore has been chasing after the island in order to cheat death by exploiting its time-travel properties, my guess is that Daddy Devilbucks was telling his mysterious henchman, ‘Would you please hurry your ass up and find me that Island?! I'm dyin' here!'"source : ew

General Season 5 Spoilers
10/27 - Sawyer and Juliet are fine. Faraday comes ashore, and he appears to be insane. He says he is from the past and not the future. Charlotte and Miles are fine as well. Charlotte does her best to keep Faraday calm but he keeps saying crazy things. These five are together until the attack. Source: Lost Spoilers
10/27 - Remember Desmond's all-knowing and slightly creepy friend from two seasons ago? The one played by the sublime Fionnula Flannigan? Well, according to my Lost moles, she is coming back this season, and we will learn that she has a very surprising connection. To another character. A major character. And the connection? It's a big one. That's all I'm saying. Source: The Ausiello Files
10/27 - I'm told there's one off-Island Dharma station in Australia, and I personally love and believe your guesses were right: The station is specifically in or around Ayers Rock/Uluru, the place Rose and Bernard visited on their honeymoon. Source: Kristin on E!Online
10/27 - "My character starts explaining to Locke the mysteries of the island," says Nestor [Carbonell], who denies his character is actually the all-powerful Jacob. "There's a phenomenal twist." Mysteries from Charlotte 's past will shed further light on the island's history. "It appears I've come back to the island to look for my birthplace," says Rebecca [Mader]. Last season, viewers saw her in a Tunisian desert studying the remains of a polar bear. [Carlton] Cuse says viewers will soon learn why she's trying to find the island's bears - and confirms the Tunisian skeleton belonged to one of them. "We've seen several bear cages," [Damon] Lindelof says. "But none of the polar bears are accounted for." Source: TV Guide
“LOST” Returns to Santa Rosa
LOST” Returns to Santa Rosa
October 27th, 2008
SPOILER ALERT! “LOST” returned to the campus of Windward Community College in Kaneohe today to film yet another scene at the “Santa Rosa Mental Institute,” where our dear Hurley (Jorge Garcia) has been a tenant.
From veteran spotter “Grappler” (who previously reported from the Windward side) comes this account of the day’s filming:
Hurley is relaxing on the hospital grounds, sitting on a bench and painting, when Locke (Terry O’Quinn) arrives. Locke is in a wheelchair with a cast on his right leg, rolling himself up to Hurley’s side.
They have a conversation. Soon enough, Hurley jumps up. He calls out to a female orderly, perhaps his attendant, named “Susie.” He asks her, “Am I talking to a guy in a wheelchair right now?” She affirms that Locke is really there.
Hurley sits back down, and they talk some more, in even more hushed tones. Locke eventually gestures over his shoulder at someone. It’s unclear whether this person is standing nearby, or is sitting in a mysterious black car with California plates parked in the distance. But from the context (and the stand-in on the set), chances are Locke is pointing at Abbadon.
At this, Hurley again jumps up, even more distressed. “What? Don’t you know? He’s evil!” He then jams his fingers in his ears, yelling, “I’m not hearing this! This is not happening!” He calls for Susie. ”I’m ready to go back now!”
Susie takes Hurley by the arm back into the hospital, leaving Locke behind.

LOST - Season 5 The First Look
* Locke looks down to the palm of his hand...and he is holding the compass Alpert brought in his bag of tricks back when Locke was a boy
* Faraday approaches the door to a Dharma station, and someone comes out with a rifle in full bio-hazard gear. Could it be the Swan station? If they traveled back in time, the island may have reverted to it's previous state - which would include all the Dharma folks and people in the stations doing the assigned work.
Love to hear your thoughts. There are several other juicy hints in the promo...what did YOU see???

Dominic Monaghan Cast in 'Fortuna'
Dominic Monaghan had a nice, long run on Lost. His portrayal of Charlie, the heroin-addicted former rock star, was nuanced and integral to the overall Lost mythology, and most fans were very sad to see him go. For an actor, leaving a well-paying consistent job on a popular television show can be difficult, especially for someone like Monaghan, who doesn't possess movie star looks and who will most likely have to spend his career working smaller roles. Dominic has just been cast in a new science fiction film set in the year 2100 called Fortuna. The film takes place in a bleak and depressing future, where climate change and a struggling economy has created a vast chasm between the wealthy and everyone else.
Fortuna is about a game that the wealthy have concocted to give the impoverished hope in the depressing times they live in. In the game Fortuna, one thousand desperate contestants vie to win a spot amongst the wealthy. However, there is more to the game than the participants would like to believe – none of the contestants are ever seen from again, which puts the elite class's goal of reducing poverty by 30% over the next 50 years in a much different light. Dominic Monaghan and Freddie Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) play contestants who enter into the game, despite their skepticism. Barthelemy Grossmann, who wrote the script and will direct, also will portray a contestant. Shooting begins November 10 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Lost Spoilers - A Momentary Break in Radio Silence
The sultans of Lost, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, along with stars Rebecca Mader and Nestor Carbonell, broke radio silence in the new TVGuide giving a few very light spoilers concerning the upcoming season. And I do mean LIGHT.
“My character starts explaining to Locke [Terry O’Quinn] the mysteries of the island,” Says Nestor, who denies his character is actually the all-powerful Jacob. “There’s a phenomenal twist.”
Mysteries from Charlotte’s past will shed further light on the island’s history. “It appears I’ve come back to the island to look for my birthplace,” says Rebecca. Last season, viewers saw her in a Tunisian desert studying the remains of a polar bear. Cuse says viewers will soon learn why she’s trying to find the island’s bears – and confirms the Tunisian skleton belonged to one of them.
“We’ve seen several bear cages,” Lindelof says. “But none of the polar bears ar accounted for.” Lindelof kids it’s a setup for an animated spinoff to be titled “Lost Bears!”

Lookie lookie just below for some Fringe Spoilage
Massive Dynamic's Bionic Woman Drops A Bombshell
We got a chance to chat with Blair Brown, who plays Nina Sharp, the powerful face of the shady corporation Massive Dynamic, on Fringe. After talking to Brown, we were left with even more questions about J.J. Abrams' weird science romp. But most interesting was the tiniest of hints Brown dropped about Nina's past.
Did they always want a woman for the face of Massive Dynamic?
They always wanted a woman. JJ is very interesting that way. He always casts strong women of all ages because he's not afraid of that. It's interesting, people mixing it up.
Will Nina have super strength with her robot hand?
I'm not sure. We're not even sure what else of Nina is bionic, so consider that. Who can say? That's one of the best things about J.J.'s writing and this whole team, is every script you get, you get more questions. Usually when you work on something you get more and more answers and things get narrower and narrower. With Fringe, things get wider and wider.
Of all the things you've read so far working on Fringe, what are you most excited about? What are you most excited to work on?
What I'm most interested is in fact the relationship with the other characters, because there's history there. The character that John Noble [Walter Bishop] plays, he and I knew each other a long time ago. So what is that, and what was that research that was happening then? I think was Nina a scientist. Was she a failed scientist? Was she a scientist that failed because she was a woman? Because she was living in an age where that often happened.
So was she a scientist? What's this history with Walter, are we going to get flashback and explore the origins of Walter and Nina?
You'll have to wait and see. I think that's not impossible. I think that's not impossible. We'll see.
So are we going to explore Nina's past love life?
I think that's not impossible, we'll see. [Laughs] Before she was bionic, and after.
You heard it hear first people Nina and Walter have a history — a history. Which in Hollywood terms means they were lovers, and why not? Walter is a hottie. Tune into to Fringe tonight on Fox.

Fringe Spoiler
Sue in Madison, Ind.: Holy frak, I love Fringe. Scoop! Scoop! Scoop!
We learn more about the ladies of Fringe very soon, said Orci: "The first thing you're going to find out is why Olivia (Anna Torv) became a cop, and those traits are going to be things that are the reason why Nina (Blair Brown) would offer her a place in her world. Nina, to some, just seems like a villain, but to others, she is fascinated by Olivia's talent, by her determination, and wants to be around similar strong women. In terms of whether or not you will find out more about her past, all I can say is maybe."

Dharma Station Spoilers
Amanda in St. Petersburg, Fla.: OK, thanks for the Lost scoop, now spill: Where is the powerful place we've already seen that might have a Dharma station in it?

Just had a little update from my source Kronos based on the new Kristin spoiler about the Dharma station in Australia.
Here is what they said when we were discussing this. Here is a link to the Wiki entry on The 45 Parallel.
Yea, that's definitely not the only one we see. There's one up near Portland, Oregon, they are saying it's located on something called the 45th parallel. They aren't going to Oregon and it's just a set."

"Goats" is set in Iraq and centers on Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor), a desperate reporter who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady (Clooney), who claims to be a former secret U.S. military psychic soldier who was reactivated after 9/11.
Mader will play McGregor's wife.

Why the Oceanic Six Must Reunite
In particular, I can now tell you why it is that the Oceanic Six must all reunite in order to get back to the Island.
Want to know why Kate (with baby Aaron), Jack, Sayid, Hurley and Sun are going to have to put their differences aside and go "all for one, and one for all" this year?
E! Networks/Comcast Entertainment Group
Well, remember what Michael Emerson recently said about Ben's statement that if any of them are to return to the Island, everyone who escaped has to go back too? He said, "I think [that dictate is] a scientific condition of the mechanism by which the Island operates. I don't think it's an esoteric or spiritual issue, I think it's science."
He wasn't just talking pretty. What I'm hearing is that the reason Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun and Hurley need to reunite is because the Oceanic Six need to fan out to a group of Dharma stations.
Even more intriguing? According to my source, these stations are not on the Island, but in other locations, and these off-Island stations are believed to be the ticket to getting back to the Island.
(Remember, the Island moved in the finale. The Island may have gone to another place...or it may have hopped into another time.)
So how does this all work? And where in the world are these stations? We'll have to tune into what is looking like an exciting fifth season in order to see.
In the meantime, my source hints that we have seen at least one of these powerful places before. Any guesses where? Post in the comments, and check out the next chat.

--------- Spotted in Hawai!? (Rumor)
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje Spotted in Hawai!?
Posted by The ODI at 4:59 AM
Hey All,Our good friend Carlos who has a LOST blog in Brazil informed us today that one of his readers took one of the LOST Set Tours in Hawaii and that the tour guide mentioned that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was spotted in Hawaii a few weeks ago.
There is no confirmation on whether he was in Hawaii to film anything and if he was there at all. We are still checking our sources to see if there is anything more to this and as soon as we hear anything more we will let you know.
What do you all think!?
Will he finally make an appearance in LOST again!?Pamela said: I did the Lost Kos Tours on September 29th. Our guide gave us some interesting information... Mr. Eko (actually, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) was seen around there in Hawaii like four weeks ago. The guide didn't know if he was there for shooting

Latest Filming Report
* The scene witnessed took place at a Catholic school, though Moosky19 believes that they might have been using it as a church because they added an extra Jesus on the cross prop on the exterior.
* The scene had four main characters: Jack, Ben, Sun and Desmond.
* Yes, Desmond.
* Ben, Sun and Jack were using the same Canton Rainier van that we reported about in our last spoiler update, which you can find here.
* In the scene Moosky19 witnessed, Sun and Ben talk in a very serious manner once they exit the van. In the middle of the conversation, Ben pulls something out of his “man purse” and gives it to Sun. Whatever it was, it was small, Moosky19 thinking that maybe it was Jin's ring. Next, Desmond comes into the scene, and then they all run into the building.
* Desmond is wearing a wedding band. Did he and Penny get married?
* Also, Sun has a gun on her the whole time.
* Moosky19 also noted that everyone appeared to be pretty buddy-buddy with Ben the whole time, or at least they were working with him without animosity.

Lost Spoilers
Sam in Detroit: Got any Lost goodies?Yep, several bites from Jorge Garcia, whom I caught up with at the Emmys:
Who is Hurley hanging with these days? "It's safe to say I'm working with people who are off the Island—I can even say I'm working with Michael Emerson, Ben. He does most of the talking—and he didn't thank me once for that candy bar." Ooh, that stinker!
What about Ben's mission to get the gang back to the Island? "I think Hurley is leaning toward regret of having gone off the Island, but I don't think he's at the point where he wants to go back, just yet. But it does seem that the Island is pulling us back, some way or another."
What about Hurley and the glorious dead—are they still chatting? Said Jorge, "Yep, and it seems like it doesn't even faze Hurley any more."
Last but not least, will the Oceanic Six ever become friends again? "Don't know. Don't know at all." Sob.

This test is, perhaps, the most challenging recruits have yet encountered in the Volunteer Recruitment Program. A great deal is demanded of you in this final examination. It is an excellent opportunity to distinguish yourself in the eyes of assessors.
Once you have completed the seventh assessment your overall results will be collated and delivered to the Volunteer Recruit Evaluation Panel for analysis. The members of this distinguished panel will make recommendations to myself, as the Head of Recruiting, regarding the specific departmental position appropriate for each recruit. Upon my review I will formally present the recommendations to the executive board of the Dharma Initiative for final approval.
Final recruit departmental positions and results will be outlined in your personalized Volunteer Assessment Dossier, which will available for download from DharmaWantsYou.com after December 15, 2008.
Good luck to you all.
Namaste.

“LOST” in Kaimuki
It was a late night for “LOST” at Sacred Heart Academy in Kaimuki. “LOST” spotter Joel posted a couple of photos and sent Hawaii Blog this report from the scene:
“They had a massive set of lights set up and Ben, Desmond and a woman were in the scene (I think it may have been Sun as she had long, straight, dark hair). I did get a chance to stand around and watch them film the scene. The woman and Ben were talking when Desmond came from the right of the scene. In a loud voice, he said, ‘What are you doing here?!’”
The woman does indeed look like Sun, and the scene does seem to fit in with the overall “rounding up the Oceanic 6″ theme of the past several location shoots. But it’s interesting that they’re connecting with Desmond, who we last saw (filming wise) in the Philippines.
Sacred Hearts and its Romanesque architecture could be standing in for any number of far-flung locations, but I’d guess not Southeast Asia.

“LOST” in Long Beach
SPOILER ALERT! The Waikiki Yacht Club was transformed into the “Long Beach Harbor Club” for evening shoots last night and tonight. Cranes and production trucks were parked nearby, as well as three notable vehicles: the blue Canton-Rainier Carpet Cleaning van, Kate’s silver Volvo, and a silver Jaguar S-Class. My friend Doug, who knows cars better than I do, says it looks like the 2008 model.
A yacht club member — who was fortunately an avid fan — said last night’s shoot involved Evangeline Lilly, Yunjin Kim, and a young boy playing Aaron. She said she was back tonight because the roster would be even larger. In addition to Kate and Sun, Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Ben (Michael Emerson) and Jack (Matthew Fox) were due on set. It looks like this scene follows the one filmed yesterday in Kalihi.
I think it’s a safe bet the shiny new Jaguar is Sun’s ride.

The Swans
Leda and the Swan is a motif from Greek mythology, in which Zeus came to Leda in the form of a swan. According to later Greek mythology, Leda bore Helen and Polydeuces, children of Zeus while at the same time bearing Castor and Clytemnestra, children of her husband Tyndareus, the King of Sparta.
As the story goes, Zeus took the form of a swan and raped or seduced Leda on the same night she slept with her husband, King Tyndareus. In some versions, she laid two eggs from which the children hatched. In other versions, Helen is a daughter of Nemesis, the goddess who personified the disaster that awaited those suffering from the pride of Hubris.
The motif was rarely seen in the large-scale sculpture of antiquity, although Timotheos is known to have represented Leda in sculpture; small-scale examples survive showing both reclining and standing poses, in cameos and engraved gems, rings, and terracotta oil lamps. Thanks to the literary renditions of Ovid and Fulgentius it was a well-known myth through the Middle Ages, but emerged more prominently as a classicizing theme, with erotic overtones, in the Italian Renaissance. As for Black Swans, there ain't much.
Black Swan is a German mutant in the Marvel Universe, raised in the Bavarian circus and highly trained in hand-to-hand, swordplay and gunmanship.
The Black Swan is also of spiritual significance in the traditional histories of many Australian Aboriginal peoples across southern Australia.
The Roman satirist Juvenal wrote in 82 AD of rara avis in terris nigroque simillima cygno ('a rare bird in the lands, and very like a black swan'). He meant something whose rarity would compare with that of a black swan, or in other words, as a black swan did not exist, neither did the supposed characteristics of the ‘rare bird’ with which it was being compared.
The phrase passed into several European languages as a popular proverb, including English, in which the first four words (a rare bird in the land) are often used ironically. For some 1500 years the black swan existed in the European imagination as a metaphor for that which could not exist. (all from Wiki)
So what are we to make of this? If a black swan is a metaphor for something that doesn't exist, then does it mean the statement in the video acusing people of cheating is a farce? Could it mean it's rare for people to cheat?
Or do I have this backwards? Zeus turned into a white swan and cheated - seduced or raped Leda. But I didn't cheat on the tests.
Curious.
Dharma and the Gods (Part 6)
Demeter - goddess of grain and the harvest, and daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea.
When her daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld, Demeter's grief was so great that she neglected the land; no plants grew, and famine devastated the earth. Dismayed at this situation, Zeus, the ruler of the universe, demanded that his brother Hades return Persephone to her mother. Hades agreed, but before he released the girl, he made her eat some pomegranate seeds that would force her to return to him for four months each year.
In her joy at being reunited with her daughter, Demeter caused the earth to bring forth bright spring flowers and abundant fruit and grain for the harvest. However, her sorrow returned each fall when Persephone had to go back to the underworld. The desolation of the winter season and the death of vegetation were regarded as the yearly manifestation of Demeter's grief when her daughter was taken from her.
Demeter and Persephone were worshiped in the rites of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The cult spread from Sicily to Rome, where the goddesses were worshiped as Ceres and Proserpine. (Encarta)
Apollo - god of candy bars...oh wait. That was a Rick Note
Apollo - son of the god Zeus and Leto, daughter of a Titan. He also bore the epithets “Delian” from Delos, the island of his birth, and “Pythian,” from his killing of the Python, the fabled serpent that guarded a shrine on the slopes of Mount Parnassus.
The functions of the Greek sun god Helios were transferred to Apollo, in his identity as Phoebus. In Homeric legend Apollo was primarily a god of prophecy. His most important oracle was at Delphi, the site of his victory over the Python. He sometimes gave the gift of prophecy to mortals whom he loved, such as the Trojan princess Cassandra.
Apollo was a gifted musician who delighted the gods with his performance on the lyre. He was also a master archer and a fleet-footed athlete, credited with having been the first victor in the ancient Olympic Games.
His twin sister, Artemis, was the guardian of young women, and Apollo was the special protector of young men. He was also the god of agriculture and cattle and of light and truth. He taught humans the art of healing (see Asclepius).
Some tales depict Apollo as stern or cruel. According to Homer's Iliad, Apollo answered the prayers of the priest Chryses to obtain the release of his daughter from the Greek general Agamemnon by shooting fiery, pestilential arrows into the Greek army. He also abducted and ravished the young Athenian princess Creusa and abandoned her and the child born to them.
Perhaps because of his beauty, Apollo was represented in ancient art more frequently than any other deity. (Encarta)
Ares - god of war and son of Zeus, king of the gods, and his wife, Hera.
Aggressive and sanguinary, Ares personified the brutal nature of war. He was unpopular with both gods and humans. Among the deities associated with Ares were his consort, Aphrodite, goddess of love, and such minor deities as Deimos (Panic) and Phobos (Fear), who accompanied him in battle. Although fierce and warlike, Ares was not invincible, even against mortals.
The worship of Ares, believed to have originated in Thrace, was not extensive in ancient Greece, and where it existed, it lacked social or moral significance. Ares was an ancestral deity of Thebes and had a temple at Athens, at the foot of the Areopagus, or Hill of Ares. (Encarta)
Hestia - virgin goddess of the hearth, the eldest daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea.
She was believed to preside at all sacrificial altar fires, and prayers were offered to her before and after meals. Although she appears in very few myths, most cities had a common hearth where her sacred fire burned. Her fire was attended by six virgin priestesses known as vestal virgins.
Poseidon - god of the sea, the son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, and the brother of Zeus and Hades.
Poseidon was the husband of Amphitrite, one of the Nereids, by whom he had a son, Triton. Poseidon had numerous other love affairs, however, especially with nymphs of springs and fountains, and was the father of several children famed for their wildness and cruelty, among them the giant Orion and the Cyclops Polyphemus. Poseidon and the Gorgon Medusa were the parents of Pegasus, the famous winged horse.
Poseidon plays a prominent part in numerous ancient myths and legends. He contended unsuccessfully with Athena, goddess of wisdom, for the control of Athens. When he and Apollo, god of the sun, were cheated of their promised wages after having helped Laomedon, king of Troy, build the walls of that city, Poseidon's revenge against Troy knew no bounds. He sent a terrible sea monster to ravage the land, and during the Trojan War he helped the Greeks.
In art, Poseidon is represented as a bearded and majestic figure, holding a trident and often accompanied by a dolphin. (Encarta)
Athena - one of the most important goddesses in Greek mythology.
Athena sprang full-grown and armored from the forehead of the god Zeus and was his favorite child. He entrusted her with his shield, adorned with the hideous head of Medusa the Gorgon, his buckler, and his principal weapon, the thunderbolt.
A virgin goddess, she was called Parthenos (“the maiden”). Her major temple, the Parthenon, was in Athens, which, according to legend, became hers as a result of her gift of the olive tree to the Athenian people.
Athena was primarily the goddess of the Greek cities, of industry and the arts, and, in later mythology, of wisdom; she was also goddess of war. Athena was the strongest supporter, among the gods, of the Greek side in the Trojan War.
After the fall of Troy, however, the Greeks failed to respect the sanctity of an altar to Athena at which the Trojan prophet Cassandra sought shelter. As punishment, storms sent by the god of the sea, Poseidon, at Athena's request destroyed most of the Greek ships returning from Troy.
Athena was also a patron of the agricultural arts and of the crafts of women, especially spinning and weaving. Among her gifts to man were the inventions of the plow and the flute and the arts of taming animals, building ships, and making shoes. She was often associated with birds, especially the owl.
Dharma and the Gods (Part 5)
Test 5 test result names - Aether, Chaos, Chronos, Oranos, Hemera, Nyx
Aether - Air God of the Upper Atmosphere.
The son of EREBUS and NYX, he looks after the air the Gods breathe. Not the polluted old rubbish we have to put up with; this is the Supergrade 5 Godstar variety. Very invigorating.
AETHER floats above AER and is illuminated with Heavenly light. He's a very bright lad, and even on the clearest day we only see the merest trace of his splendor as it filters down to us.
At night his mother NYX draws the curtains and the gloom of EREBUS descends upon the world. When morning comes, his sister HEMERA wafts away the murky mists and his radiant glow is seen again.
Attempts to discover traces of the aether on Earth were carried out by Michelson and Morley in a famous experiment of 1887. Did they find any? Nope. This non-result led directly to Einstein's Theory of Relativity, but dashed their hopes of selling bottled aether to the physics community. (godchecker.com)
Chaos - the void which came into being before anything else.
Some say that Chaos was born from Mist, and that Mist was the first to exist. Others affirm that Chaos is not a void, but a rough unordered mass of things. It is also asserted that Chaos existed from the beginning, together with Nyx, Erebus (Darkness of the Underworld), and Tartarus, and consequently they consider Chaos to be as Nyx and Erebus: one of "the powers below the ground".
It is told that during the war between the TITANS and the OLYMPIANS, the fight came to such a degree of intensity that an amazing heat seized Chaos. (homepage.mac.com)
Chaos is also Goddess of Emptiness and Confusion. She is the gaping shapeless void who gave birth to the universe. (godchecker.com)
Chronos - said to be the personification of time. His name actually means "time," and is alternatively spelled Khronos (transliteration of the Greek) or Chronus (Latin version). Not to be confused with Cronus, a Titan.
Chronos was imagined as an incorporeal god, serpentine in form, with three heads—that of a man, a bull, and a lion. He and his consort, serpentine Ananke (Inevitability), circled the primal world-egg in their coils and split it apart to form the ordered universe of earth, sea and sky.
He was depicted in Greco-Roman mosaics as a man turning the Zodiac Wheel.
Rick note - Ben anyone?
Chronos is usually portrayed through an old, wise man with a long, gray beard, such as "Father Time." (Wiki)
Oranos (Uranus) - In Greek mythology Uranus (often cited as Ouranos), Father Sky is personified as the son and husband of Gaia, Mother Earth (Hesiod, Theogony).
Uranus and Gaia were ancestors of most of the Greek gods, but no cult addressed directly to Uranus survived into Classical times, and Uranus does not appear among the usual themes of Greek painted pottery. Elemental Earth, Sky and Styx might be joined, however, in a solemn invocation in Homeric epic.
Most Greeks considered Uranus to be primordial (protogenos), and gave him no parentage. (Wiki)
Hemera - Goddess of Daytime and Daylight.
Her 'Who's Who' entry informs us that she is the daughter of EREBUS and NYX and is the mother of THALASSA. Her pedigree goes right back to CHAOS and she was the first Goddess of the Day.
Every morning she pulls away the dark curtains of EREBUS to let her brother AETHER's light shine forth. (godchecker.com)
Nyx - Goddess of the Night and daughter of CHAOS.
Being a real night person, she loves the dark. Which explains why she is the consort of EREBUS the God of Darkness — or at least liked him enough for a fling which resulted in AETHER, HEMERA and the FATES.
Every evening she coaxes him out to spread his gloomy darkness, which obscures the shining AETHER and lets the stars come out to play. It's up to daughter HEMERA to waft away the darkness every morning to let the sun shine. (godchecker.com)
Dharma and the Gods (Part 4)
Test 4 test result names - Helios, Crius, Atlas, Oceanus, Cronus
Helios - the ancient sun god, son of the Titans Hyperion and Thea, and brother of Selene, goddess of the moon, and Eos, goddess of the dawn.
Helios was believed to ride his golden chariot across the heavens daily, giving light to gods and mortals. At evening he sank into the western ocean, from which he was carried in a golden cup back to his palace in the east.
Helios alone could control the fierce horses that drew his fiery chariot. When his son Phaëthon persuaded Helios to let him drive the chariot across the sky, Phaëthon was killed.
Helios was widely worshiped throughout the Greek world, but his principal cult was at Rhodes. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Colossus of Rhodes was a representation of Helios. He is often identified with Apollo, the later Greek god of the sun. (Encarta)
Rick note - as a reminder, the combination to the safe in Ben's house was the same as the latitude where the Colossus of Rhodes stood - leading me to link it to 4-toe.
Crius - one of the Greek Titans, the principal gods of early Greek mythology.
Crius and his siblings were the children of Uranus (Sky) and Gaia (Earth). He had five brothers; Coeus, Cronus, Hyperion, Lapetus, Oceanus; and six sisters; Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Rhea, Tethys, Theia, and Themis.
The Titans were best known for their war against the Olympian gods. Many of these gods were captive within the stomach of their father, Cronus.
After Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, freed his siblings the war with the Titans began. After ten long years of battle Zeus asked Gaia for help. She told him to release the Cyclopes and the hundred-handed ones. This led to Crius and the other Titans losing the long war. (pantheon.org)
Atlas - one of the second-generation Titans. He personified the quality of endurance (atlaô).
In one tradition, Atlas led the Titanes in a rebellion against Zeus and was condemned to bear the heavens upon his shoulders. In another, he was said to have been appointed guardian of the pillars which held earth and sky asunder.
He was also the god who instructed mankind in the art of astronomy, a tool which was used by sailors in navigation and farmers in measuring the seasons. These roles were often combined and Atlas becomes the god who turns the heaven on their axis, causing the stars to revolve.
Herakles encountered the Titan during his quest for the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. He agreed to take the heavens upon his shoulders while Atlas fetched the apples. The hero also slew the Hesperian Drakon, which in vase painting appears as the Titan's tormentor, and built two great pillars at the ends of the earth, perhaps to relieve the Titan of his labour.
In a late myth, Atlas was transformed into the stony Atlas mountain by Perseus using the Gorgon's head. The Titan was also the constellation Kneeler. (theoi.com)
Oceanus - one of the Titans, the son of Uranus and Gaea.
With his wife, the Titan Tethys, he ruled over Ocean, a great river encircling the earth, which was believed to be a flat circle. The nymphs of this great river, the Oceanids, were their daughters, and the gods of all the streams on earth were their sons.
In later legends, when Zeus, chief of the Olympian gods, and his brothers, Poseidon and Hades, overthrew the Titans and assumed their power, Poseidon and his wife, Amphitrite, succeeded Oceanus and Tethys as rulers of the waters. (Encarta)
Cronus - ruler of the universe during the Golden Age. He was one of the 12 Titans and the youngest son of Uranus and Gaea, the personifications of heaven and earth.
The first sons of his parents were the three Hecatonchires, the 100-handed, 50-headed monsters whom Uranus had imprisoned in a secret place. Gaea sought to rescue them and appealed for help from her other offspring, including the Cyclopes. Cronus alone accepted the challenge. He attacked Uranus and wounded him severely; Cronus thus became the ruler of the universe.
Cronus and his sister-queen, Rhea, became the parents of 6 of the 12 gods and goddesses known as the Olympians.
Cronus had been warned that he would be overthrown by one of his children, and he swallowed each of his first five children as soon as it was born. Rhea, however, substituted a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes for their sixth child, Zeus.
Zeus was hidden in Crete (Kríti), and when he was grown, with the aid of Gaea, forced Cronus to disgorge the other five children together with the stone. The stone was later removed to Delphi.
Zeus and his five brothers and sisters waged war on Cronus and the other Titans. Zeus was aided by the Hecatonchires and the Cyclopes, whom he freed from the prison where they were kept by Cronus. Cronus and the Titans were thereafter confined in Tartarus, a cave in the deepest part of the underworld. (Encarta)
