Two popular television shows this week featured former Hawaii residents. Actor Blake Kushi landed a guest-starring role on ABC's Emmy Award-winning "Pushing Daisies," playing a manager of a Chinese restaurant. Born and raised in Hilo, Kushi graduated from Waiakea High School and received music and theater degrees from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. His background includes improv work and stints at Manoa Valley Theatre, Diamond Head Theatre and Kumu Kahua Theatre. Living in Los Angeles for four years helped Kushi earn gigs on cable TV and a role in a feature film about Bruce Lee. But this was his first network job.
Kushi isn't Chinese, but that "wasn't a problem for me or the director or anyone on the production," he said via phone. "It was a nonissue. The only part that worried me was having lines in Mandarin Chinese." Thankfully, they provided a dialect coach during the six-day shoot in August.
Kushi anticipates this will be a stepping stone for his career. "I'm hoping to build upon this and have a stronger resume so I can be considered for bigger roles."
In the incomprehensibly zany household of Jon and Kate Gosselin, Jon (originally from Hawaii) and Kate prepared to travel to the islands to renew their vows with their twins and sextuplets (nice touch: he wore a kukui-nut lei throughout the episode). How about a reality show that tests your filmmaking and blogging skills -- in two languages? "Aloha Challenge," a seven-episode educational series that premieres at 8 p.m. next Friday on KIKU-TV, starts with eight semi-bilingual college interns. Four hail from Japan; the others are American. To win the grand prize of $10,000 and the title of "Top Producer" in a competition to produce the best blogs and short films about Hawaii, teams must collaborate and communicate while barely speaking each other's languages. High school students also are involved.
"Aloha Challenge" has multicultural, bilingual and multimedia qualities, according to Lorenzo Wyatt, the show's executive producer and host. Wyatt, who lived in Japan for several years and recruited students to come to Hawaii to participate, also wrote an English/kanji curriculum to accompany the show. "If you give students something to do where they have to problem-solve, it means you're going to have to explain things you don't have the language for," Wyatt said. The first episode deciphers the complex game and introduces the players. From then on, personalities and plenty of drama emerge. I stumbled upon the "Lost" crew filming a New York City scene in downtown Honolulu this week. Taxis were adorned with N.Y.C., and extras wore suits and coats in various shades of gray and black. Stars included Terry O'Quinn (John Locke) and Malcolm David Kelley (Walt) -- together! It got me excited for the new season, which can't come soon enough.

LOST” Returns to Santa Rosa

SPOILER ALERT! “LOST” returned to the campus of Windward Community College in Kaneohe today to film yet another scene at the “Santa Rosa Mental Institute,” where our dear Hurley (Jorge Garcia) has been a tenant.
From veteran spotter “Grappler” (who previously reported from the Windward side) comes this account of the day’s filming:
Hurley is relaxing on the hospital grounds, sitting on a bench and painting, when Locke (Terry O’Quinn) arrives. Locke is in a wheelchair with a cast on his right leg, rolling himself up to Hurley’s side.
They have a conversation. Soon enough, Hurley jumps up. He calls out to a female orderly, perhaps his attendant, named “Susie.” He asks her, “Am I talking to a guy in a wheelchair right now?” She affirms that Locke is really there.
Hurley sits back down, and they talk some more, in even more hushed tones. Locke eventually gestures over his shoulder at someone. It’s unclear whether this person is standing nearby, or is sitting in a mysterious black car with California plates parked in the distance. But from the context (and the stand-in on the set), chances are Locke is pointing at Abbadon.
At this, Hurley again jumps up, even more distressed. “What? Don’t you know? He’s evil!” He then jams his fingers in his ears, yelling, “I’m not hearing this! This is not happening!” He calls for Susie. ”I’m ready to go back now!”
Susie takes Hurley by the arm back into the hospital, leaving Locke behind.

LOST - Season 5 The First Look
Two things stood out to me in the promo:
* Locke looks down to the palm of his hand...and he is holding the compass Alpert brought in his bag of tricks back when Locke was a boy
* Faraday approaches the door to a Dharma station, and someone comes out with a rifle in full bio-hazard gear. Could it be the Swan station? If they traveled back in time, the island may have reverted to it's previous state - which would include all the Dharma folks and people in the stations doing the assigned work.
Love to hear your thoughts. There are several other juicy hints in the promo...what did YOU see???

Lost Actors to Perform For The Honolulu Theatre For Youth

Five actors from ABC’s hit series “Lost” will perform at a fundraiser for Honolulu Theatre for Youth, a rare group outing for members of the Hawaii-based cast.
Actors Henry Ian Cusick, Michael Emerson, Jorge Garcia, Daniel Dae Kim and Elizabeth Mitchell will perform a scene from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which is a fall production of the theatre.
The performance is part of HTY’s annual “Le Masquerade” fundraiser, being held Oct. 25 at the Koolau Grand Ballroom in Kaneohe.
“Lost” actors have previously performed to benefit HTY, a professional theatre company founded in 1955 and one of the state’s largest performing arts organizations.
The event is open to the public and information is available at www.htyweb.org.

"The Other 48 Days"
The tail section survivors discover the Arrow bunker. Inside they find a radio, a Bible and a glass eye.
Ana Lucia confronts Goodwin. He claims the kidnapped children are better off and admits to killing Nathan. He states that the (kidnapped) people on the list are good people, the rest are bad people. They fight and Goodwin is killed.

Abrams Explains the Use of Kelvin in his Projects
They did offer up the origin of the U.S.S. Kelvin's name. Director J.J. Abrams' maternal grandfather was named Henry Kelvin. He owned an electronics company and was very influential to Abrams as a boy. So in honor of him, Abrams has dropped the name "Kelvin" into every project he's worked on. In "Mission: Impossible III," a letter is addressed to "H. Kelvin," and on the first episode of the new series "Fringe" a character worked on a project called "Kelvin Genetics."

Dominic Monaghan Cast in 'Fortuna'

Dominic Monaghan had a nice, long run on Lost. His portrayal of Charlie, the heroin-addicted former rock star, was nuanced and integral to the overall Lost mythology, and most fans were very sad to see him go. For an actor, leaving a well-paying consistent job on a popular television show can be difficult, especially for someone like Monaghan, who doesn't possess movie star looks and who will most likely have to spend his career working smaller roles. Dominic has just been cast in a new science fiction film set in the year 2100 called Fortuna. The film takes place in a bleak and depressing future, where climate change and a struggling economy has created a vast chasm between the wealthy and everyone else.
Fortuna is about a game that the wealthy have concocted to give the impoverished hope in the depressing times they live in. In the game Fortuna, one thousand desperate contestants vie to win a spot amongst the wealthy. However, there is more to the game than the participants would like to believe – none of the contestants are ever seen from again, which puts the elite class's goal of reducing poverty by 30% over the next 50 years in a much different light. Dominic Monaghan and Freddie Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) play contestants who enter into the game, despite their skepticism. Barthelemy Grossmann, who wrote the script and will direct, also will portray a contestant. Shooting begins November 10 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Massive Dynamic's Bionic Woman Drops A Bombshell
We got a chance to chat with Blair Brown, who plays Nina Sharp, the powerful face of the shady corporation Massive Dynamic, on Fringe. After talking to Brown, we were left with even more questions about J.J. Abrams' weird science romp. But most interesting was the tiniest of hints Brown dropped about Nina's past.
Did they always want a woman for the face of Massive Dynamic?
They always wanted a woman. JJ is very interesting that way. He always casts strong women of all ages because he's not afraid of that. It's interesting, people mixing it up.
Will Nina have super strength with her robot hand?
I'm not sure. We're not even sure what else of Nina is bionic, so consider that. Who can say? That's one of the best things about J.J.'s writing and this whole team, is every script you get, you get more questions. Usually when you work on something you get more and more answers and things get narrower and narrower. With Fringe, things get wider and wider.
Of all the things you've read so far working on Fringe, what are you most excited about? What are you most excited to work on?
What I'm most interested is in fact the relationship with the other characters, because there's history there. The character that John Noble [Walter Bishop] plays, he and I knew each other a long time ago. So what is that, and what was that research that was happening then? I think was Nina a scientist. Was she a failed scientist? Was she a scientist that failed because she was a woman? Because she was living in an age where that often happened.
So was she a scientist? What's this history with Walter, are we going to get flashback and explore the origins of Walter and Nina?
You'll have to wait and see. I think that's not impossible. I think that's not impossible. We'll see.
So are we going to explore Nina's past love life?
I think that's not impossible, we'll see. [Laughs] Before she was bionic, and after.
You heard it hear first people Nina and Walter have a history — a history. Which in Hollywood terms means they were lovers, and why not? Walter is a hottie. Tune into to Fringe tonight on Fox.

Rebecca Mader, best known for playing scheming redhead Charlotte on ABC's "Lost," is in final negotiations for the lead female role in "Men Who Stare at Goats," the George Clooney- and Grant Heslov-produced adaptation of the book by Jon Ronson. Heslov is directing.
"Goats" is set in Iraq and centers on Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor), a desperate reporter who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady (Clooney), who claims to be a former secret U.S. military psychic soldier who was reactivated after 9/11.
Mader will play McGregor's wife.
Stephen Lang, who appears in James Cameron's "Avatar" and Michael Mann's "Public Enemies," also joins the cast that includes Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges, playing an intelligence officer.
Mader and Lang are repped by Innovative.

Why the Oceanic Six Must Reunite
Lost's fifth-season premiere is still at least four months away, but I've just gotten some exclusive insight into next year's stories.

Well, remember what Michael Emerson recently said about Ben's statement that if any of them are to return to the Island, everyone who escaped has to go back too? He said, "I think [that dictate is] a scientific condition of the mechanism by which the Island operates. I don't think it's an esoteric or spiritual issue, I think it's science."
He wasn't just talking pretty. What I'm hearing is that the reason Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun and Hurley need to reunite is because the Oceanic Six need to fan out to a group of Dharma stations.
Even more intriguing? According to my source, these stations are not on the Island, but in other locations, and these off-Island stations are believed to be the ticket to getting back to the Island.
(Remember, the Island moved in the finale. The Island may have gone to another place...or it may have hopped into another time.)
So how does this all work? And where in the world are these stations? We'll have to tune into what is looking like an exciting fifth season in order to see.

Latest Filming Report
* The scene witnessed took place at a Catholic school, though Moosky19 believes that they might have been using it as a church because they added an extra Jesus on the cross prop on the exterior.
* The scene had four main characters: Jack, Ben, Sun and Desmond.
* Yes, Desmond.
* Ben, Sun and Jack were using the same Canton Rainier van that we reported about in our last spoiler update, which you can find here.
* In the scene Moosky19 witnessed, Sun and Ben talk in a very serious manner once they exit the van. In the middle of the conversation, Ben pulls something out of his “man purse” and gives it to Sun. Whatever it was, it was small, Moosky19 thinking that maybe it was Jin's ring. Next, Desmond comes into the scene, and then they all run into the building.
* Desmond is wearing a wedding band. Did he and Penny get married?
* Also, Sun has a gun on her the whole time.
* Moosky19 also noted that everyone appeared to be pretty buddy-buddy with Ben the whole time, or at least they were working with him without animosity.

Lost Spoilers
Sam in Detroit: Got any Lost goodies?Yep, several bites from Jorge Garcia, whom I caught up with at the Emmys:
Who is Hurley hanging with these days? "It's safe to say I'm working with people who are off the Island—I can even say I'm working with Michael Emerson, Ben. He does most of the talking—and he didn't thank me once for that candy bar." Ooh, that stinker!
What about Ben's mission to get the gang back to the Island? "I think Hurley is leaning toward regret of having gone off the Island, but I don't think he's at the point where he wants to go back, just yet. But it does seem that the Island is pulling us back, some way or another."
What about Hurley and the glorious dead—are they still chatting? Said Jorge, "Yep, and it seems like it doesn't even faze Hurley any more."
Last but not least, will the Oceanic Six ever become friends again? "Don't know. Don't know at all." Sob.

I am extremely pleased to announce that the seventh and final test in the Dharma Initiative's Volunteer Recruitment Program is now available at www.dharmawantsyou.com.
This test plays an extremely important part in determining your final role within the Dharma Initiative's upcoming research project.
This test is, perhaps, the most challenging recruits have yet encountered in the Volunteer Recruitment Program. A great deal is demanded of you in this final examination. It is an excellent opportunity to distinguish yourself in the eyes of assessors.
Once you have completed the seventh assessment your overall results will be collated and delivered to the Volunteer Recruit Evaluation Panel for analysis. The members of this distinguished panel will make recommendations to myself, as the Head of Recruiting, regarding the specific departmental position appropriate for each recruit. Upon my review I will formally present the recommendations to the executive board of the Dharma Initiative for final approval.
Final recruit departmental positions and results will be outlined in your personalized Volunteer Assessment Dossier, which will available for download from DharmaWantsYou.com after December 15, 2008.

“LOST” in Long Beach
SPOILER ALERT! The Waikiki Yacht Club was transformed into the “Long Beach Harbor Club” for evening shoots last night and tonight. Cranes and production trucks were parked nearby, as well as three notable vehicles: the blue Canton-Rainier Carpet Cleaning van, Kate’s silver Volvo, and a silver Jaguar S-Class. My friend Doug, who knows cars better than I do, says it looks like the 2008 model.
A yacht club member — who was fortunately an avid fan — said last night’s shoot involved Evangeline Lilly, Yunjin Kim, and a young boy playing Aaron. She said she was back tonight because the roster would be even larger. In addition to Kate and Sun, Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Ben (Michael Emerson) and Jack (Matthew Fox) were due on set. It looks like this scene follows the one filmed yesterday in Kalihi.
I think it’s a safe bet the shiny new Jaguar is Sun’s ride.

The Swans
As you know the final test was a video telling us we were either cheaters or not due to this Black Swan thing. After watching the video the test results showed me as a White Swan. So I checked, and sure enough there is a Greek myth regarding a swan.
