Lost Emmy Nominations

Man I really hope that Lost sweeps this just like Return of the King did for the Oscars. Kind of an overall set of awards for the entire series. I expected the Emerson and O'Quinn nominations, but I was pleasantly surprised at Fox for Actor and Mitchell for Guest Actress. The Jack Bender nomination was great also along with Darlton for Writers. I love how the web/DVD special "Mysteries of the Universe" is going up against all of the teeny bopper stuff.

'Lost' Villian Ambushed by Brandy!

Originally posted Jun 7th 2010 12:24 AM PDT by TMZ Staff
Almost every "Lost" fan would be super excited to meet Michael Emerson ... even a Grammy winner like Brandy.

Emerson was having a friendly chat with our photog at LAX on Saturday, when Brandy politely interrupted just to say she's a huge fan. The whole encounter lasted less than 10 seconds ... and it's unclear if Michael (or our photog) even knew she was famous!

Brandy tweeted after, "OMG! I just met Michael Emerson from the series Lost. I lost my mind! Straight up FAN. I wanted to take a flick but I was too shy to ask.

"You're welcome, Brandy.

Lost’s Michael Emerson picked to educate the masses

Posted by: Estella
No one could ever accuse me of being overly Scientific, except when it comes to methods for applying eyeshadow so that it doesn’t crease or fade (oh yes, there ARE ways). But when you bring Michael Emerson aka Ben Linus of Lost into the equation, I can maybe get a tad interested in science.

Michael Emerson as Ben Linus on Lost. He's an evil genius. Photo: ABC
Dr. Craig Venter has recently announced he and his team have created a living, self-replicating cell. That’s pretty major. Even I know that. Because this is a big break- through for science, and causes so many questions in the religious and scientific worlds, the Science Channel is airing a special all about it.

This special is called Creating Synthetic Life and it will air on Thursday, June 3rd at 8pm EST. Is the Dharma Iniative involved? Well, just a tad. Ben Linus aka Emmy-Award winning Lost alumnus Michael Emerson will be narrating the special for us. As if science couldn’t be freaky enough on its own, eh? Kidding!

Following the special at 9pm ET, Science Channel will present Creating Synthetic Life: Your Questions Answered with Emmy Award-winning journalist Paula Zahn hosting a roundtable discussion with Dr. Venter; journalist and author Michael Specter; futurist, inventor and author Raymond Kurzweil; George Church, professor of genetics at Harvard University; Father Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco and others, exploring important ethical, scientific and societal questions surrounding Dr. Craig Venter’s recent announcement.

‘Lost’ Star: Action-Filled Finale Needed Extra Minutes to ‘Breathe’

by Matt Webb Mitovich
May 5th, 2010 5:26 PM
‘Lost‘ star Michael Emerson says he’s “not surprised at all” that the series finale airing Sunday, May 23, has been expanded to two-and-a-half hours.

“The finale script was so thick and so dense with action,” Emerson tells Fancast. “When we were shooting it, we went so far overtime that I thought, ‘How are they ever going to squeeze all this into two hours?!’”

As it turned out, when executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse Tweeted on Monday that they were “done” editing the finale, they themselves apparently had realized that an extra twenty-some minutes of content would benefit the sure-to-be-dense climax.

“If ‘Lost’ has any flaws, it’s that occasionally we suffer from trying to cut too big a show [for the given time slot],” Emerson says. “So I’m happy to hear they thought there was enough great stuff that they had to let it breathe. It’s a really great sign.”

Lost's Michael Emerson Injured During Filming

Tue., Mar. 23, 2010 1:15 PM PDT by Marc Malkin

Michael Emerson gets beat up a lot playing Ben Linus on Lost.

So much so that when friends recently saw the Emmy winner sporting a major bruise in Hawaii, they thought it was fake and possibly just some leftover makeup from a day of shooting.

But, no, it was real. What happened? Read on for the painful details.

"He has a huge shiner on his right eye!" a source reports. "Apparently, he has a fight scene and the choreography when slightly awry. One of his costars actually connected with Michael's face and gave him a huge black eye."

You'd think the real-life injury would be incorporated into the Lost storyline, but our source said, "Michael joked that the makeup department now has to hide his black eye every day instead of creating one."

Michael Emerson offers expert commentary on "Dr. Linus"

ABC.com has a pretty neat feature that allows you to watch each episode of Season Six with some special guest commentary. And this week, it's none other than Michael Emerson himself, offering up his inside thoughts on his very own episode, "Dr. Linus." Here's some info on how you can find the expert commentary, and how to make it work.

First, visit ABC.com - this link takes you right to the expert commentary for this particular episode. You need to do a couple of things before you can see the written commentary from the actor: First click the Connect with Facebook icon and connect to your Facebook account. And then you'll be prompted to sign in to ABC.com (or create an account if you don't have one). You'll find the links you see in the picture above quite a ways down on the page -- scroll down and they'll appear.

Last step: Click on the title of the show, "Dr. Linus" that you see right under the picture of Michael Emerson (again, a good ways down the page). That will launch the episode with commentary.

It's an interesting way to watch- I just caught the first few minutes, and I'm thinking I'll watch it all tonight before tomorrow's latest, "Recon."

Here's a screen cap of what it looks like with the expert commentary playing.

Locke and Ben as Hitmen?

After Lost's final season, we might see O'Quinn and Emerson team up again.
by Matt Fowler

February 25, 2010 - Lost's Terry O'Quinn (Locke) and Michael Emerson (Ben) will no doubt go down as one of the best pairings in TV history. And while it's true that Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Cartlon Cuse have been adamant about the fact that there won't be any Lost spinoffs (although our fingers are still crossed for CSI: LAPIDUS!), there's a chance that we might see O'Quinn and Emerson back together on the small screen. What whaaat?

According to TVGuide.Com, Terry O'Quinn has been writing up ideas for a new series and shopping around a show bible (outlines of characters and stories) for it. Envisioning it as a TNT-style show, O'Quinn told TVGuide.Com that the show would re-team him up with Michael Emerson, with the two of them playing suburban hit men juggling family issues.

SO IN!

While we don't know any more specifics, O'Quinn has spoken to Lost creator J.J. Abrams about it and said "I really hope this works out because Michael would be in his prime in this. We'd play kind of awkward partners."

In response to the idea, Emerson stated "It's very sweet of him. I'm all in favor of it. Any reason to work with Terry again."

Michael Emerson on The Bonnie Hunt Show

'Lost': Michael Emerson says teacher role 'has a big meaning'

by Wendy Mitchell

If you missed Michael Emerson on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, check out the video below. The man who plays Lost’s Ben Linus (or, as Kimmel suggests, ‘Ben Lini’) says that last night’s appearance as a history teacher in the Sideways world wasn’t a throwaway. “I don’t think it’s just some mild departure. I think it has a big meaning that will play out as we go,” Emerson told Kimmel, before adding: “You have no idea what’s coming in that particular storyline.” Oooh, juicy! Despite not having read the final scripts, Emerson assured fans: “You’re going to have a satisfying conclusion to the series.”

I can usually keep an actor separate in my mind from his or her character, but I can’t do this with Emerson — he IS Ben Linus to me. If I saw him on the street I might have a panic attack. Anyone else think that Emerson will forever be associated with creepy Ben?

Lost's Michael Emerson Is Found on The Soup

Fri., Feb. 12, 2010 11:15 AM PST by Peter Gilstrap

If you think the death-defying adventures of Jack Bauer on 24 are improbable and downright confusing, you're not alone.

Not even Lost star Michael Emerson can get his head around the plot twists and existential weirdness, and shares his befuddlement while dropping in on Joel McHale.

Also, keep your eyes out for the smoke monster.

And don't forget to tune in tonight for more Soup at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

‘Lost’s Michael Emerson: ‘Smokey’ Can’t Kill Ben

by Matt Webb Mitovich
Feb 8th, 2010 11:46 PM

ABC’s ‘Lost‘ (Tuesdays at 9/8c) kicked off its final season by yes, answering a question here or there, but it also introduced a slew of brand-new players and sure-to-be-bedeviling mysteries. We coaxed some Season 6 insight from Michael Emerson, who deliciously portrays the mightily fallen Benjamin Linus. Plus, which on-screen moment did the Emmy winning cast member find to be “unbelievable” in its shock value?

After “NotLocke” (aka the Smoke Monster) orchestrated Jacob’s death, why didn’t he just turn around and kill Ben?
That’s a good question and I wondered it myself. But there is a reason why he can’t do that.

Does Ben suspect he has done a bad thing by killing Jacob?
I really don’t think Ben indulges in regrets. We’ve seen him make huge, possibly bad choices all through his life, but he just keeps moving forward. It may not be a good trait, but it is his.

We like to assign the trait of “good” to Jacob, in contrast to the apparently evil “Man in Black.” Yet Jacob, with his dismissive “What about you?” comment to Ben, came off as, well, a uncompassionate tool. Maybe he’s not quite as good as we believe?
That’s what I think, also – or at least his agenda is more complicated than we can know. It’s certainly not as simple as we thought. And yes, [Jacob] rather begs for his own death in a way.

With his dying breath, Jacob famously said to NotLocke, “They’re coming.” How long until we find out who “they” are?
It will be a while, unless I’m missing something. I’m not yet sure what that remark means. ['Lost' was filming its 13th episode at the time of this interview.]

Might we see Ben in the “flash-sideways” reality where Flight 815 arrived in Los Angeles safely?
Oh…. That’s a hard one to answer because these dimensions of time and space are… porous. And I think that’s about as much as I should say.

‘Lost’s Mysterious “Man in Black” Is Back

I’m going to name three of your ‘Lost’ cast mates. You tell me what you’ll remember most about working with each. Let’s start with Terry O’Quinn (Locke).
Breathless moments of danger in small spaces.

Naveen Andrews (Sayid).
Terror.

And Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet).
A great dinner companion.

Which scene was the most memorable to shoot?
They fall into different categories – the dramatic, the humorous, and the absurd. My favorite light-hearted scene is cooking dinner for Juliet; it was so much fun, so out of character and so absurdly domestic of Benjamin. And in my entire life as an actor I will never forget shooting the scene where John Locke is trying to hang himself, I talk him out of it, and then I strangle him. Unbelievable.

What’s one thing you won’t miss about the ‘Lost’ experience? Jorge Garcia has mentioned Hawaii’s mosquitoes, Daniel Dae Kim spoke of having to learn Korean at the last minute….
I won’t miss guns, explosions, and horseback riding.

‘Lost’ Star: Final Season Answers “Major Questions”

What do you hope to do next – another series regular TV gig right off bat, return to the stage…?
I think it would be nice to take a little break from the routine of television and mix it up for a little while. Maybe I could finagle my way into a little part in a movie, or do a play back in New York. I sure hope I get a change of pace – I’d like to do something funny.

You have a “connection” over at ‘True Blood,’ maybe you could do a one-shot over there.
I am known to some people over there, yes. [Emerson's wife, Carrie Preston, plays Merlotte's waitress Arlene on the HBO series.] When are they going to call me up and put me to work, I do not know. [Laughs]

'Lost' star Michael Emerson holds his own (umbrella)

06:05 PM

Recommend Actress Carrie Preston and Lost's Michael Emerson arrive at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 17, 2010 in Beverly Hills, California.

The umbrellas are up. Among the early stars on the Golden Globes red carpet: Lost's Michael Emerson with wife Carrie Preston.

Emerson recently dissected his Ben Linus role for Entertainment Weekly, saying: "John Locke always wanted answers. Benjamin Linus always had answers, or gave the impression that he had answers. so there was an economy of information going on between them. But now that economy is upended in the show. I don't know where we're at now."

'Lost' Exclusive: Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn on Emmys, comedic moments, and that strangulation scene

by Dan Snierson

Over the course of pop culture history, there have been many terrific two-man teams. Abbott and Costello. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Beavis and Butthead. To that illustrious list, may we submit for your consideration: Benjamin Linus and John Locke. Together, the prickly pair have driven much of the Lost saga — and the on-screen chemistry between Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn has been a key source of entertainment, dramatic and comedic. (Emerson and O’Quinn are the only two actors to date who have won Emmys on the show, most recently with Emerson snagging the trophy for best supporting actor in the fall.) Look back no further than last season, which brought us “Dead is Dead,” the episode that featured a tense and humorous jousting match between the two rivals and, of course, “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham,” which yielded one of the great moments in Lost history: Ben talks Locke out of hanging himself…before strangling him to death!

Last fall, while visiting the Lost production in Hawaii, we wanted to experience the Ben and Locke Show live, so we corralled Emerson and O’Quinn for a wide-ranging interview. You will be reading — and seeing — more of our adventures over the next few months at EW.com and in the magazine. In fact, this week’s issue of EW contains an informative Q&A with Emerson and O’Quinn. Although we can’t give you any season 6 teasers (yet), you’ll receive a peek into their working relationship and genuine friendship. In the meantime, enjoy a few bonus quotes from the mad men of Lost. —Jeff Jensen and Dan Snierson

On O’Quinn realizing last season that he wasn’t really playing John Locke anymore:
O’QUINN: There was a sort of gradual awareness, and then [with the season finale], a sort of a sad acceptance of the fact that John Locke was dead. I thought, “Well, wow, I guess I’m not playing the same person anymore. That role on Lost is over.”

On whether the new Locke is good or evil:
O’QUINN: Boy, they sure are loading it up to look as if John Locke is the devil. And then that makes me suspicious. Right? Apparently I’m playing somebody who can look like John Locke. It was easier playing this same person last year when I didn’t know who it was. Now it’s hard to not load things up and become arch, be heavy.

On playing comedic moments:
EMERSON: I began to feel last season that I was in my own little private comedy. He was very sarcastic all the time. There aren’t a lot of characters you can just bounce jokes off of — Jack’s not a big knee-slapper — but there’s a special kind of Lost humor, where we talk glibly about very grave matters.
O’QUINN: When somebody’s pointing a gun at you every episode, eventually it’s like, “Whatever. You’re not gonna shoot me. Or if you do, I’ll live.”
EMERSON: [to O’Quinn] Was it you that said, “On Lost, you can’t ask somebody to pass the salt without pulling a gun”?
O’QUINN: I don’t think so. Maybe it was you.
EMERSON: I want it to be you.

On shooting the pivotal scene in which Ben strangles Locke:
EMERSON: It was long, slow work that day…. It was very quiet on the set. The crew was gripped by the scene and fully supported the work in front of the camera.
O’QUINN: I remember prepping with you for the sequence. We were sitting in our chairs, going over the dialogue, but Michael has a hard time just sitting in his chair. So, pretty soon, I’m still sitting in my chair, and he’s on his knees in front of me, doing that moment where Ben begs Locke not to kill himself, and the whole time, the crew is just walking by us, not looking at us or saying a word.

On whether they’ll miss working together:
O’QUINN: I haven’t told Michael this yet, but I think about it a lot. A working relationship that is this smooth, it’s as unusual as a relationship with a loved one. At least for me. After Lost is over, I’m going to get a hold of somebody and say, “Write something for us.” I just want to keep doing this.
EMERSON: I don’t think it’s the last time we’ll be playing opposite each other.

On how much they worry about meeting fan expectations:
O’QUINN: Not as much as it worries [exec producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse] and those guys, I’m sure. What worries me is what I have control over. And that’s my performance. And if in fact the whole thing is a big laugh and it turns out badly and everything, I don’t anticipate feeling terrible about it. Because every day to me is work. And it’s given a lot already.
EMERSON: I’m also getting easier with the idea of secrets, of walking away with things unanswered, with mysteries left open. That’s all right, too.

Have you heard from any of your co-stars yet?
"I see here on my computer screen a message from Jorge [Garcia, who plays Hurley] just popped up. He's always very sweet. It says, 'Nice job. We'll be rooting for you.'"
