The New People was a short lived (half season) 45 minute ABC drama that aired in the fall of 1970. A plane load of hippy college students and one adult authority figure crash land on an island and eventually discover a fully stocked but abandoned village constructed for a canceled government bomb test. Special guest stars played various survivors who had one story then receded back into anonymity. Their grown-up mentor dies early on letting these young rebels fend for themselves and try to create their own utopian system.
The novel 45 minute format interlocked it with another 45 minute series, "Music Scene," hosted by
David Steinberg and featuring the comedy improv troupe The Committee. When it was canceled Lily Tomlin made the jump over to NBC's Laugh-In which was on in the same time slot.
The linked-to article points out a number of interesting similarities between The New People and Lost, both in basic premise and in specific plot developments. I wonder if JJ or Darlton remember watching this show?
